BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team dropped its fifth loss of the season as they were defeated by the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University, 4-3, on Thursday evening.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 5-5 overall and Gardner-Webb improves to 5-8 with the win.
Wofford took an early 1-0 lead winning the doubles point. At the No. 2 position, freshman Haris Poric and junior Walker Heffron defeated A.J. Stillwell and Benjamin Kaszas, 8-3. The top duo of junior Rob Galloway and freshman Trevor Gotkowski clinched the point defeating Nikita Zverkov and Ernest Alberch, 8-6.
In singles play, Galloway gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead defeating Kaszas, 6-2, 6-3 at the top court. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then took a 3-2 lead as they went on to win the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Sophomore Parks Thompson then tied the match at 3-3 defeating Pepe Batalla, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Gardner-Webb would then clinch the match as Johnathan Walker won in a match tiebreak at the No. 6 singles position, 4-6, 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4).
The Terriers return to action on Sunday, March 2, when they host the Georgia Southern Eagles at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center for their Southern Conference opener at 1 p.m.
