SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2014 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship is set for Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2, at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. This will be the 79th annual Indoor Track and Field Championship for the men and the 27th for the women.

The championships will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with the women’s pentathlon events, followed by the men’s heptathlon events at 10:15 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 4:40 p.m.

Appalachian State took home the men’s title at the 2013 Indoor Championship, edging out Samford by 4.5 points. Western Carolina’s Brandon Harison was named Most Outstanding Athlete for his performance, while Samford’s Steven Bastien was selected as the Most Outstanding Field Performer.

The 2013 women’s champion was Western Carolina, which finished 5.5 points ahead of Appalachian State to take home the title. Samford’s Lauren D’Alessio and Appalachian State’s Breanna Alston were name Co-Most Outstanding Athletes at last year’s championships, and both return this year looking to improve on last season’s performance. Western Carolina’s Alisha Bradshaw took home Most Outstanding Field Performer in 2013.

In the most recent power rankings, which include meets through Feb. 22, Samford leads the men’s rankings, followed by Western Carolina and Appalachian State. Western Carolina sits atop the women’s power rankings, with Samford and Appalachian State trailing.

The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend’s championships.
