ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team earned its third sweep in four matches today, Feb. 26, in beating Charlotte 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
"We played really well and showed a lot of heart," said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. "The girls were playing a little bit out of position but our doubles looked really good today. We still have a few things we need to work on but we're really excited to open Southern Conference play Saturday against Georgia Southern."
The Phoenix got off and running in winning the doubles point with 8-2 wins on both court No. 2 and 3. Bryn Khoury and Taylor Casey earned a victory on court No. 3 over Jessica Perez and Macy Vonderschmidt, thenFrida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz finished minutes later with a win over Victoria Pahlett and Natsuko Takayanagi.
Barbora Lazarova kept Elon's roll going in singles as she defeated Lisa Grosselius on court No. 2, 6-0, 6-3, to give Elon a 2-0 lead. Tolley Rice then increased the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court No. 4 against Tyler Baker.
Camara Ruiz clinched Elon's fourth consecutive victory on court No. 6 with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Perez.
Jordan Johnston extended the lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win on court No. 1 against Pahlett, then Casey made it 6-0 Elon with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Vonderschmidt on court No. 5.
Bryn Khoury was the only Elon player to drop her respective first set on the afternoon, but the senior recovered on court No. 3 against Takayanagi to take the second set and ultimately the third set tiebreaker, 5-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
Samford 6, UAB 1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team extended its 2014 home winning streak to five-consecutive matches Wednesday as the Bulldogs earned a dominant 6-1 triumph against the UAB Blazers in a cross-town rivalry match held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the victory, Samford (5-1) remained undefeated at home this season and improved to 5-0 when competing at the Samford Tennis Center. The Bulldogs' lone loss of the 2014 campaign occurred at No. 21-ranked Auburn.
UAB (4-5), which was coming off a doubleheader sweep of Jacksonville State and North Alabama on Friday, had its two-match winning streak snapped Wednesday.
Samford quickly tallied the first point of the match in doubles play by registering 8-3 and 8-1 triumphs on courts No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The Bulldogs' combinations of Stephanie N'tcha and Jessica Northcutt, as well as Yasmeen Ebada and Emily Mallory both remained undefeated this year and improved to 2-0 in dual-match play.
In Wednesday's singles action, Samford's Ebada, Northcutt and Mallory all tallied quick straight-set victories to solidify the Bulldogs' overall team win at 4-0.
From that point on, Samford's Kristin Lewis and N'tcha both tacked on three-set wins to ultimately record the Bulldogs' final 6-1 triumph. With her win on court No. 1, Lewis improved to 3-3 in dual-match play this season, while N'tcha upper her record on the year to a perfect 5-0.
Also remaining undefeated in singles play this season were Ebada and Mallory. Ebada moved to 5-0 when playing on court No. 3 in dual-match action, while Mallory improved to 4-0 on court No. 5.
Samford currently owns a dominant 27-6 record in singles play this season, as well as an equally stellar 13-3 mark in the doubles competition.
Appalachian State 7, Lees-McRae 0
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women’s tennis began a four-match homestand with a 7-0 win over Lees-McRae on Wednesday at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (3-4) quickly wrapped up the doubles point early and carried their momentum into singles play to sweep the Bobcats (1-5) and capture their second-straight win while remaining undefeated at home.
Appalachian’s duo of Olivia Isbey/McKayla Zupan picked up a 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, while the No. 2 team of Clare Cox/Megan Mullen came away with an 8-0 victory as well.
The No. 1 doubles team Mackenzie LaSure/Gabrielle Wreder led 5-1, but the match went unfinished as Appalachian had already wrapped up the doubles point.
The Mountaineers continued their dominance in singles play, winning all six matches with ease. Wreder captured a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 while Brianna Armellino won her match at No. 2 by a final of 6-2, 6-0. In the No. 3 singles match, Zupan snagged a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Sarah King won her match at the No. 4, quickly defeating Taylor Bost (6-0, 6-0), while Megan Mullen had the same success at the No. 5, winning 6-0, 6-0 as well. Carson Shell had a hard-fought battle at the No. 6, but still grabbed the final singles point winning 6-0, 6-2.
