Wofford finishes third at Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's golf team wrapped up the first-ever Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational on Tuesday, earning third place with a two-round total of 41-over-par 617.
On a day in which each of the top four teams struggled, the Terriers carded the second-best team score of the final round with a 27-over-par 315. Freshman Katy Funk posted the best round of the five Terriers competing in the team competition, carding an even-par 35 on the front nine en route to a 4-over 76. Funk also posted a 76 in Monday's first round and completed the 36-hole tournament tied for sixth place with an 8-over-par 152.
Senior Anne Marie Covar also earned a top-10 to help Wofford earn third place. Covar completed the tournament tied for eighth, carding a two-round total of 9-over-par 152. She got off to a rocky start with a 4-over 39 on the front nine but pulled it together for a 1-over 38 on the back, which included birdies on holes 15 and 16.
Freshman Allyson Markiewicz competed in the tournament as an individual and matched Covar with a 9-over 153 to tie for eighth place, tying Funk's team-best final round of 4-over 76. The freshman earned the highest finish of anyone competing as an individual and carded a 1-under 34 on the front nine on Tuesday, sinking two birdies.
High Point took the team title with a winning total of 37-over-par 613, overcoming a two-stroke first-round deficit to finish two strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs' 39-over 615 was two strokes better than Wofford. Winthrop finished in fourth place (+52), followed by Presbyterian (+72) and The Citadel (+88).
Gardner-Webb's Julia Henderson earned medalist honors with a two-round total of 5-over-par 149. Henderson entered Tuesday tied for second place with teammate Taylor Dodson and shot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to edge out both Dodson and first-round leader Sarah Bae of High Point by one stroke.
Also competing for the Terriers in the team competition were junior Lauren Dunbar, senior Shelby Winters and sophomore Maegan Higgins. Dunbar carded two rounds of 6-over 78 to tie for 12th, while Winters took 23rd and Higgins tied for 24th. Higgins entered Tuesday tied for fifth place after carding a 3-over 75 on Monday but struggled in her second round to a 16-over 88.
Three additional Terriers competed as individuals. Sophomore Emiley Pagrabs led the remaining Terriers with two rounds of 7-over 79 to tie for 15th. Senior Alex Hendricks took 22nd and junior Elizabeth Thompson tied for 28th.
The Wofford women's golf team has two weeks off of competition before its next tournament, when it will head to Orange Park, Fla., for the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational. Play begins Friday, March 14.
The Citadel finishes sixth at Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Citadel senior Erica Pellegrini fired a two-day score of 159 (+15) and finished in 18th at Wofford’s Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational held at the Country Club of Spartanburg. The Bulldogs finished sixth at the tournament.
Pellegrini recorded rounds of 79 and 80, one stroke better than those of teammate Eraina Manor (160, +16) who finished in a three-way tie with High Point teammates Grier Bennett and Margaret Suchan.
The Citadel posted a team score of 664 (+88). High Point captured first place with a 613 (+37), while Gardner-Webb (615, +39) edged tournament host Wofford (617, +41) for third place.
Kellie Anderson (85-82=167) notched a +23 to finish in 32nd and McKenzie Duncan (93-88=191) finished with a +37, to close in 38th place.
Renata Sucha (90-95=195; +41) completed The Citadel scorecard with a three-way tie for 39th.
Gardner-Webb's Julia Henderson (74-75=149) took home individual honors after posting a 5-over-par, slightly edging teammate Taylor Dodson (74-76=150) and Sydney Needham (High Point), who tied for second with a 150 (+6).
The ‘Dogs return the links next week they head to Kiawah Island, S.C., to compete in the Kiawah Spring Classic at the Oak Point Golf Course.
Samford finishes fifth at USA Women’s Invitational
MOBILE, Ala. – In its first tournament of the 2014 spring season, the Samford University women’s golf team registered a fifth-place performance Tuesday at the USA Women’s Invitational, which was hosted by the University of South Alabama at the par-72, 6,071-yard Azalea City Golf Club.
The Bulldogs tallied a third-round score of 312 on Tuesday to conclude the 54-hole competition with a final team mark of 918 (300-306-312).
Memphis rallied to win the championship title of the two-day event with a three-round total of 905 (300-304-301), while Jacksonville State placed second (303-300-304=907) and South Alabama earned a third-place finish (310-300-299=909).
Individually, Samford true freshman Sydney Needham fired a team-best, 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to register a sixth-place finish out of 83 competitors at the 14-team event. Needham closed out the tournament with a 54-hole score of 224 (75-76-73).
Samford’s Bailey Gray and Natalie Mitchell finished tied for 17th and 29th place, respectively, Tuesday. Gray carded a third-round mark of 79 and concluded the week with a three-round score of 230 (75-76-79). Mitchell, who posted a brilliant opening-round tally of even-par 72 on Monday, closed out the competition with a 54-hole mark of 235 (72-84-79).
The Bulldogs’ scoring at the 2014 USA Women’s Invitational was rounded out by true freshman Arin Eddy (78-77-85=240) and senior Alex Jasper (83-77-81=241).
Along with Samford, the field for this week’s tournament consisted of the following teams: South Alabama, Alabama State, UALR, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, ULM, New Orleans, Southern Illinois, Spring Hill, Troy, UAB and Western Kentucky.
Memphis’ Leighann Cabush garnered individual medalist honors after she finished the tournament with a three-round total of 220 (73-73-74). Cabush was able to hold off Jacksonville State’s Anne Kathrin Albrecht by two strokes in the final round of competition. Albrecht completed the 54-hole tournament with a mark of 222 (73-74-75).
Samford will next be in action March 2-4 as the Bulldogs head to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the 2014 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which will be held at both Oak Point and Cougar Point country clubs.
