Wofford sits third at Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Maegan Higgins shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday to lead the Wofford women's golf team to third place through round one of The Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational, hosted by Wofford at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
As a team, the Terriers shot a 17-over-par 305 and are five shots back of tournament leader Gardner-Webb. Sandwiched in between stands High Point at 14-over-par.
Higgins is tied for fifth place on the individual leaderboard, two shots back of HPU's Sarah Bae, who is alone in first after carding a 1-over 73. Senior Anne Marie Covar and freshman Katy Funk are also in contention. The two Terriers are tied for seventh place, posting first-round totals of 4-over 76.
Junior Lauren Dunbar and senior Shelby Winters round out the five Terriers competing in the team competition. Dunbar is tied for 16th place with a 6-over 78, while Winters is tied for 24th with a 9-over 81.
The Terriers also have four individuals competing in the 42-player field. Freshman Allyson Markiewicz heads the group after posting a 5-over 77. She is tied for 10th place.
Tuesday's final round of the 36-hole tournament begins at 10 a.m. All groups will tee off from the first hole, with the final group comprised of the top three scores from teams in first through third place. Higgins, Bae and Gardner-Webb's Taylor Dodson make up the final group and will tee off at 11:44 a.m.
Samford third at USA Women’s Invitational
MOBILE, Ala. – The Samford University women’s golf team carded a two-round total of 606 (300-306) at the 12th Annual USA Women’s Invitational on Monday and currently sits in third place out of 14 teams competing in the University of South Alabama-hosted event being held at the Azalea City Golf Club.
Samford will head into Tuesday’s third round of competition trailing first-place Jacksonville State by just three strokes and second-place Memphis by two shots.
Play is slated to begin in the third round of action at 8:15 a.m. (CST).
The Bulldogs opened Monday’s competition with a first-round tally of 300 and were tied for second place with Memphis following the initial round of play. Samford then closed out day one with a second-round score of 306.
Individually, the Bulldogs’ Bailey Gray and Sydney Needham both closed out Monday’s competition tied for 11th place in the tournament standings. Samford’s pair tallied identical scores of 151 (75-76) following 36 holes of play at the par-72, 6,071-yard Azalea City Golf Club.
Rounding out the Bulldogs’ scores were Arin Eddy (78-77=155), Natalie Mitchell (72-84=156) and Alex Jasper (83-77=160).
Along with Samford, the field for this week’s tournament consists of the following teams: South Alabama, Alabama State, UALR, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, ULM, New Orleans, Southern Illinois, Spring Hill, Troy, UAB and Western Kentucky.
ULM entered the competition as the defending champion of the USA Women’s Invitational. Last season, the Warhawks claimed the team title by posting a weather-shortened, 36-hole score of 616 (310-306).
Following this week’s 2014 USA Women’s Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama, the Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action March 2-4 as the Bulldogs head to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the 2014 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which will be held at both Oak Point and Cougar Point country clubs.
