Brown, Stalzer Earn Weekly Baseball Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern outfielder Stryker Brown and Elon left-hander Jake Stalzer have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 17-23. The selections are made by the league office.

Brown, a senior from Dalton, Ga., hit .412 with 10 RBIs last week, helping the Eagles to a 5-0 mark with a win over Georgia Tech and a four-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Against the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, Brown was 1-for-4 with a double as GSU picked up the 4-3 win.

Friday against UMES, Brown went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and two runs scored as the Eagles scored their most runs in nearly five years in a 23-0 win. The next day, Brown was a combined 3-for-7 with a grand slam in GSU’s doubleheader sweep. He wrapped up his weekend with a 2-for-4 effort with a double and two RBIs against UMES on Sunday.

Georgia Southern (7-1) returns to action Wednesday when it heads to Macon, Ga., to face Mercer at 4 p.m.

Other top hitters included: Jaylin Davis (Appalachian State), Hughston Armstrong (The Citadel), Lee Miller (Davidson), Casey Jones (Elon), Tyler Filliben (Samford), Dykota Spiess (Western Carolina) and Eric Brenk (Wofford).

Stalzer went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA last week, picking up two of the Phoenix’s four wins. The junior from Albia, Iowa, went seven innings in each outing, starting with a six-hit showing in a win over Cincinnati on Feb. 17. The lefty struck out four and walked just two, allowing just an unearned run in the 3-1 victory.

Against Wagner on Sunday, Stalzer allowed just three hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking three. He did not allow a run as Elon went on to the 7-3 win.

Stalzer shares the league lead with a 0.00 ERA on the season so far.

Elon (5-1) is back in action Tuesday when it hosts UNCW at 4 p.m.
