The Citadel downs Campbell, SIUE; SIUE falls to North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Citadel wrestling team earned Southern Conference dual wins over SIUE 34-3 and Campbell 21-16 on Sunday at Carmichael Arena to close out its dual slate with an impressive 11-3 overall record and 6-1 SoCon mark.
The Bulldogs opened the day with a dominant 34-3 win over SIUE, winning every weight class with the exception of the heavyweight bout.
Aaron Walker and seventh-ranked Turtogtokh Luvsandorj extended their winning streaks to 15 and 16 straight, respectively, as Walker earned the pin over Logun Taylor before Luvsandorj collected a 4-2 decision over Matthew Lester.
In the second match, the Bulldogs avenged a loss to Campbell suffered last season with a hard-fought 21-16 victory over the Fighting Camels.
After falling behind 7-0, the Bulldogs won their next four bouts, including a win by 12th-ranked Ugi Khishignyam, followed by a major decision victory by 149-pounder Matt Frisch.
Frisch, who posted a major decision win over SIUE earlier in the day, improved his season record to 24-8, while Khishignyam closed out the 2014 regular season with a 19-3 record.
Walker gained a win by technical fall, while Luvsandorj followed with an impressive pin to give the Bulldogs an 18-7 lead. The tandem heads into the SoCon Championship having won their last 16 and 17 bouts, respectively.
A loss at 174 by Kenneth Radford, followed by a win at 184 by Jack Duane, maintained the 11-point advantage heading into the final two bouts, assuring the Bulldogs their sixth straight win and 11th dual victory of the season.
SIUE also fell to host North Carolina 31-15 in a nonconference bout.
SIUE 285-pounder David Devine was the lone double winner. He defeated The Citadel's Joe Bexley 5-2 and then downed UNC's Bob Coe 8-1.
SIUE's upper weights, minus Devine, each lost their opening matches against The Citadel by three points or fewer. Jake Residori, Deshoun White and Josh Wood all won their matches against North Carolina.
The Citadel and Campbell will take the next two weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Championship, hosted by Campbell, on March 9 in Buies Creek, N.C. SIUE closes its regular season at Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cougars will also face Davidson in Boone, N.C.
