Davidson 7, USC Upstate 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Brites Moniz-Soares won her third straight singles and doubles matches in helping lead Davidson to its second win in the past three matches with a 7-0 victory at home against USC-Upstate Friday afternoon in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson moved to 4-5 on the season, with all four wins coming at home, while it improved to 9-1 in the all-time series vs. the Spartans. USCU fell to 1-8 on the campaign.
The day started off with a clean sweep in doubles as all three Wildcat teams won by the scores of 8-5, 8-4 and 8-1. The pair of Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer moved to a team-best 6-2 on the year with their 8-5 triumph at No. 1.
Moniz-Soares and Cummer continued the winning ways in singles action as Davidson took all six matches. The Wildcats’ No. 1 player Moniz-Soares cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win to move to 5-3 on the year.
Cummer ran her record to 5-3 (5-4 overall) at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Joining her in the win column was Nisha Crouser at No. 3 (3-6, 6-2, 3-2 (7-0)), Sarah Stein at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0) and Jenna Brunner at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2), who is tied with Cummer for the second-best singles record at 5-4.
Tamara Hill won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.
After its three-match homestand, Davidson now goes on the road for a six-match swing. The Wildcats will play four of those matches in Florida, starting March 1 at Florida Atlantic.
Georgia 7, Furman 0
ATHENS, Ga. – The seventh-ranked Georgia Bulldogs blanked Furman Friday in women’s tennis action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point to open the match. Silvia Garcia and Kate Fuller notched an 8-6 victory versus junior Alex Moreno-Kaste and senior Katherine Oudin at flight one, and Mia King and Maho Kowase defeated senior Margaret Boyette and freshman Karlee Bryde, 8-2, in the number three match-up. The flight two match was unfinished.
In singles play, Fuller topped Bryde, 6-1, 6-0, at flight four, before Caroline Brinson registered a 6-0, 6-2 win over junior Kelly Sullivan at flight five. Garcia, ranked #6 nationally, clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Moreno-Kaste in the top match-up, then King defeated Boyette, 6-3, 6-2, at number six.
The Paladins fell in very close first sets at flights two and three. At number two, Furman freshman Ansley Speaks lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(7-4), to Kowase, ranked #17 in the nation, then dropped the second set, 6-0. In the number three contest, #43 Lilly Kimbell topped Oudin, 7-5, 6-3.
Furman (3-3) will entertain East Carolina Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
North Carolina Central 4, Appalachian State 3
DURHAM, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis began its three-match weekend with a 4-3 loss to North Carolina Central on Friday at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Mountaineers (1-3) took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but dropped four singles matches to the Eagles (1-6) and suffered the loss.
Appalachian's team of Clare Cox/Gabrielle Wreder took an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while Mackenzie LaSure/Brianna Armellino grabbed an 8-5 win at No. 2. NCCU took the win at No. 3 doubles as its team of Lynsey Cover/Tamara Jemeric defeated App State's Olivia Isbey/McKayla Zupan by an 8-1 final.
In singles play, the Eagles won each of the top four flights to earn the match victory, though the Mountaineers did get wins at No. 5 from Jessica Thaggard (6-1, 6-1) and at No. 6 from Sarah King (6-1, 6-0).
Cox suffered a 6-2, 7-5 loss at No. 1 while Wreder dropped a 7-5, 6-0 decision at No. 2. Armellino was defeated by a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 tally at No. 3 and LaSure fell by a 7-6,6-7, 10-7 score at No. 4.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow when they take on Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m. before heading to Presbyterian on Sunday.
