Davidson 4, George Mason 3

DAVIDSON, N.C.  — Playing into the late hours of Friday night, the Davidson men’s tennis team came away with a 4-3 win at George Mason thanks to J.B. Gough’s comeback tie-breaker win at No. 5 singles at the Montclair Country Club.

Tied at 3-all in the match, it came down to the No. 5 singles match of Gough and Tanner Baine. The pair split their first two sets apiece by the score of 6-3. They went back-and-forth in the final set until it came down to a tie-breaker. Gough found himself down 4-2 in the tie-breaker, but then stormed back for a 7-5 win to take the match and give Davidson the winning team point.

Trailing 3-1 in the match, senior Connor Evins and Alex Howard got things tied up for the ‘Cats with wins at No. 2 and 6 singles, respectively. Evins pushed his win streak to four straight with a thrilling three-set affair. He won the first set, 6-3, but fell 7-5 in the next one, forcing a third set. Like Gough’s match, it was another down to the wire finish. Evins went to a tie-breaker against Jimmy Lange and prevailed for his team-leading fifth singles wins, 7-3.

Howard won in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 6-4.

Snapping a personal four-match losing skid was Ethan Kallick, who netted the first team point of the evening for Davidson at No. 4 singles. The senior cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win for his first victory of the season.

George Mason (3-2) opened the match by taking two of the three doubles positions for a 1-0 lead. The lone doubles team to win for Davidson was Howard and Evins, who won their second match together by scoring an 8-3 decision.

Ricky Saad and Evan Watkins nearly gave Davidson the first team point, pushing their doubles match at No. 2 to a tie-breaker, but fell short 7-5 in the tie-breaker to fall 8-7 in the match.

 

Jacksonville State 4, Chattanooga 2

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team dropped a 4-2 match at Jacksonville State this afternoon.  The Mocs fall to 1-5 with the loss while the Gamecocks even their record at 4-4.

UTC won the doubles point, taking tough matches at No. 1 and No. 2.  Senior Jorge Varon and sophomore John Peacey improved to 3-2 in the top spot with a (8-7(5)) win at No. 1 over Pedro Wagner and Jeff Wendler-Filho.  Sophomores Luke Saunders and Gino Delavalle won for the first time as a pair this season at No. 2, also scoring a (8-7(5)) win over Jaryd Reese and Felipe Wenzel. 

UTC went up 2-0 with a win at No. 1.  Varon was trailing 5-1, but Wagner had to pull out with an injury.  Jacksonville State took the next three singles in straight sets.  The team win came down to Devalle and No. 4 and junior Pavels Grigorjevs at No. 2. 

Grigorjevs was in a battle with Reese.  Each of the first two sets went to tiebreakers and it was 2-2 in the third when the outcome was decided.  Wendler-Filo closed out the dual with his (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) comeback win over Dellevalle at No.  4.

Coastal Carolina 4, Appalachian State 2

CONWAY, S.C. – Appalachian State University men's tennis saw its two-match winning streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss at Coastal Carolina on Friday at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers (2-2) picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, but could not overcome a touch Chanticleer (5-3) squad, which won four singles flights, avoiding having to face Appalachian in doubles play.

Oliver Casey remained undefeated on the year as he picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 while Matt Saltsgaver earned Appalachian's second point with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 6.

It was all Chanticleers beyond that as App State's Sebastien King lost to the 109th ranked player in the nation, Coastal's Philipp Tsangaridis by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles.

Daniel Hoang won the first set at No. 3, but eventually fell by a score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 while Zach Bost dropped a straight-set decision (6-4, 6-0) at No. 4 and Jack Maddocks also fell in straight sets by a 7-6, 6-1 score at No. 6.

Coastal Carolina clinched the match with the win at No. 3 singles, which was the fifth match to finish before Saltsgaver's win gave Appalachian a point for the 4-2 final.

The Mountaineers will remain in Conway where they will take on Richmond tomorrow at 11 a.m. to wrap up the weekend.
