Chattanooga finishes 10th at Central District Invitational
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team shot its third-lowest round of the season with a 3-over-par 291 Tuesday at Cypress Links Course. The round gave the Mocs an 885 total, which is its second-best this year, and a 10th-place finish, a single stroke behind Indiana.
Agathe Sauzon led the way Tuesday with a 1-under-par 70. She completed her 54 holes at 4-over 220, tied for 29th with teammate Jordan Britt, who turned in a 74 (+2).
Emily McLennan and Isabella Loza rounded out the counting scores with 1-over-par 73s. McLennan wound up tied for 31st, one stroke behind Sauzon and Britt.
No. 14 Vanderbilt overcame a two-stroke deficit to top No. 21 UCF by one stroke. The Commodores’ 281 gave them a two-day total of 844. No. 20 Michigan State ended up five strokes back in third.
Vandy’s Simin Feng won medalist honors in a playoff over the Spartans’ Allyssa Ferrell. The duo shot 9-under-par 207. UCF teammates Fanny Cnops and Kristine Odaiyar tied for third at 208.
Chattanooga returns to the course in two weeks at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The event is played at two venues – Oak and Cougar Point Golf Clubs – on Kiawah Island, S.C.
UNCG finishes 12th at Central District Invitational
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The UNCG women’s golf team opened the spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Central District Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at the Cypress Links Golf Course. The Spartans finished 12th overall with a score if 948 (312-323-313), with their first-round score of 312 tying for second-lowest mark of the season.
Vanderbilt won the team portion of the event with an 844, while Simin Feng of Vanderbilt and Allyss Ferrell of Michigan State won individual honors with 9-under 207 scores. The 14-team field at the Central District is one of the top fields in the country this week, as six different ranked teams took part in the event. Joining the Spartans were No. 22 Central Florida, Chattanooga, Houston, Indiana, No. 37 Louisville, No. 24 Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 48 Notre Dame, Oakland, Rutgers, No. 45 SMU, Toledo and No. 15 Vanderbilt.
Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir led the Spartans with a 47th-place finish as she carded a 9-over par 225. Bjornsdottir opened the week with an even-par 72 before posting a 7-over 79 in round two and a 2-over 74 Tuesday to conclude play. Her even-par score in round one was a season-low for Bjornsdottir, while her 54-hole score of 225 was also her best showing of 2013-14.
Sophomore Sammie Buchanan was the Spartans’ second finisher, placing 53rd overall with an 11-over-par 227. Buchanan was consistent over the three rounds as she carded a 76-76-75 in the 54-hole event. Freshmen Kristin Powers and Maddie MacClurg finished with scores of 249.
UNCG returns to the course March 2-4 at the Kiawah Invitational at Cougar Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. The 54-hole event will see 18 rounds played each day.
Wofford finishes 12th at Amelia Island Intercollegiate
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Wofford College women’s golf team completed its first tournament of the spring season on Tuesday, earning 12th place at the Amelia Island Collegiate, hosted by Jacksonville University at the Amelia Island National Golf Club.
Junior Lauren Dunbar highlighted the Terrier effort, tying for 16th place with a 54-hole total of 8-over-par 224. Dunbar began her day with a birdie on the par-4, 342-yard 10th hole, and carded three birdies on the round.
Senior Anne Marie Covar also earned a top-20, tying for 20th place with a three-round total of 9-over-par 225. Covar shot the best final round of any Terrier, carding two birdies and just three bogeys for a 1-over 73. Starting on the 11th, Covar’s final birdie came on her finishing 10th hole, as she shot an even-par 36 on the back nine.
As a team, Wofford shot a final round of 28-over-par 316 to complete the tournament with a 68-over-par 932, finishing ahead of both Illinois State and Florida Atlantic. The Terriers shot 20-over 308 in each of their first two rounds on Monday.
Florida International finished with a winning total of 5-under-par 859. The Panthers were 17 under par heading into Tuesday’s final round and shot a 12-over 300 to hang on by 12 strokes over Kennesaw State.
FIU’s Camila Serrano took the medalist honors in a playoff with Daytona State College’s Tiffany Chan. The two finished the tournament with an 8-under 208, and Serrano made par four straight times on No. 18 to win the playoff.
The Wofford women’s golf team hosts The Country Club of Spartanburg Spring Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
