CULLOWHEE, N.C. – National honors continue to flood in for Western Carolina junior right-hander Jeremy Null following his season-opening performance in the Catamounts’ 3-2 road win over No. 2 Mississippi State last Friday.Null, who fanned 12 Bulldog batters over eight innings without allowing a run, was among five collegiate baseball players recognized Tuesday by the NCAA in its Top Performers from Week 1, while also garnering National Pitcher of the Week plaudits from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The Claremont, N.C., product moved into a tie for 16th in career strikeouts at WCU, matching former Catamount and MLB veteran Jerry Reed with 184 Ks.On Monday, Null was named one of Collegiate Baseball's Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week.
It is the second straight season that Null has opened the season with double-digit strikeouts. He fanned 13 in a home win over Washington State to open the 2013 season. Coincidentally, Null’s next start is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21, against that same Cougar squad in Pullman, Wash.
