SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior Cameron Silverman has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played through Feb. 16. Silverman is ranked 27th in the nation in singles and has begun the season 4-2 at the top spot for Elon and has a win over a ranked opponent.
Elon began the season with a 4-3 upset win over No. 7 Duke. Silverman knocked off Duke’s Jason Tahir at the top singles position (6-5, 3-6, 6-1). Tahir entered the match ranked No. 52.
After falling to Virginia’s Mitchel Frank (2-6, 5-6 {2-7}), Silverman rebounded with a pair of wins. After topping Samford’s Elliot Barnwell (4-6, 6-1, 6-5) in a nonconference match, he downed UNC Asheville’s Daniel Kripak last week, 6-1, 6-2.
Silverman began the season with a 6-5, 6-3 win over William & Mary’s Ben Guthrie at the NC State Invitational in early January. He also scored an upset win in doubles play as Silverman and Stefan Fortmann knocked off NC State’s Sean Webber and Robbie Mudge, 6-5 to begin the season. In their most recent match, Silverman and Fortman topped UNC Asheville’s Brett Landau and Alex Crocker (6-4) at No. 1 doubles.
The Phoenix returns to action Friday when Elon visits UNCW.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Oliver Casey, Davidson’s Connor Evins, Furman’s Adam Steryous, Chattanooga’s Gino Delavalle and Wofford’s Haris Poric.
