Chattanooga Competes at Cupid Classic
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Cupid Classic at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The women’s DMR A team placed second while the B team was fifth. The men’s DMR took fourth and seventh.

Freshman Jessica York led off the women’s A team followed by junior Gabby Cader, sophomore Kiaana Howard and junior Keeley Stewart ran the anchor to finish with a time of 12:34.49, just over three seconds of the lead pace set by Southern Conference foe Western Carolina. The B team finished fifth with a time of 13:00.62 and was led off by junior Jessica Philpott. Junior Ambria Reese ran the second leg for the Mocs followed by freshman Chandler Rogers and anchored by sophomore Helenka Kis.

The men’s A team, with a time of 10:22.24, was led off by senior Mark Cole and featured sophomore Marquis Carter in the second position with sophomore Trevor Janssen third and anchored by senior Nathan Wanuch. The men’s B team, sophomore Zack Darby, sophomore DeQuantez Sandifer, sophomore Matthew Marshall and senior transfer Harry Smithers was seventh with a time of 10:37.41.

With the Southern Conference championships just two weeks away, many of the younger runners were able to gain valuable experience and a few hit PR’s in their respective events.

York topped her previous best time in the 800 meter run with a 2:23.21, just getting edged by Rogers who also PR’d with a time of 2:23.17.

In the 400 meter run, Sandifer ran the event in a PR time of 51.85, shaving 2.99 seconds off his previous best set in December 2012 at the MTSU Christmas Invitational. Howard cut nearly two seconds off her 400 meter with a time of 1:00.76.

 

Samford Competes at Cupid Classic
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University track and field team competed in the Cupid Classic hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday, Feb. 14.

Several Bulldogs had notable outings in the one day event with the men's distance medley team picking up Samford's lone first place finish. The squad of 'Dogs posted a time of 10:02.85 to take the lead position amongst the bevy of competitors.

Marie Demedicis posted an impressive third place finish in the women's 800m event with a time of 2:09.52.

Anna Laura Irvine and Francis Bernard tabbed a pair of top ten finishes in the mile run with times of 5:09.33 and 5:09.68 respectively.

Rachel Wooten rounded out the top track performances with a seventh place finish in the women's 3000m with a time of 10:10.84.

In the field Nicole Charley notched the highest finish for the Bulldogs on the day with a third place score in the women's triple jump competition with a jump of 12.19m; Charley also posted a fifth place finish in the women's long jump (5.74m)

Aerial Horton claimed a fifth place finish in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.03m.

Three Bulldogs posted top twenty results in the men's and women's pole vault competitions with Chris Thrasher finishing 11th with a 4.45m vault; Morgan Johnson (3.65m) and Claire Goodson (3.65m) finished 15th and 17th respectively in the women's division.

Sidney Jordan placed 15th in the men's shot put event with a 14.73m toss.

Brandon Bassett claimed 10th place in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.93m.

Bob Elliot II claimed a fifth place finish in the men's high jump (1.95m) and a 16th place finish in the men's triple jump (13.75m).

 

Furman Competes at Iowa State Classic
AMES, IOWA -- Freshman Tanner Hinkle set a new Furman indoor track and field record after posting a time of 14:29.18 in the 5,000m Friday night at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.  Hinkle’s time was over 20 seconds better than the previous Paladin record of 14:52.91, set by David Maxfield in 1989.

Hinkle, a native of Mason, Mich., placed 28th overall in the event at the meet, one of the premier indoor track and field events in the country this weekend.  Earlier this indoor season, he set a meet record in the 5,000m at the Emory Crossplex.  During the 2013 cross country season, Hinkle earned All-SoCon second team accolades after placing ninth with a time of 25:30.25 at the league cross country championships, helping the Paladins to a league championship.  For his efforts, he was also selected to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
