Furman duo tied for 12th at Florida State Match-Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Valentina Romero (+2) and senior Aubrie Street (+2) each fired a 74 to tie for 12th place as the Furman women’s golf team opened the 2014 spring season Friday at the second annual Florida State Match-Up Tournament at the par-72, 6,314-yard Southwood Golf Course.
Romero, a native of Cali, Colombia, parred her first three holes before registering bogeys on No. 4 and No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under. Following a bogey on No. 11, she recorded four additional pars on the back to finish the day at 2-over. Street, who hails from Medford, Oregon, carded three bogeys in her first seven holes, making the turn at -2, then notched five pars on the back nine to finish the day tied with Romero. The Paladin duo is six strokes back of leader Matilda Castren of Florida State, who shot a 68 to open the tournament.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+4) birdied No. 16 to card a 76 and tie for 27th in Friday’s opening round, while rookie Macy McRaney (+6) was tied for 40th after shooting a 78 with a birdie on No. 6, a par-3, to start the tournament. Sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+11) recorded an 83 on Friday to tie for 56th.
Senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir, playing as an individual, notched three bogeys on the day, including back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14, to conclude the first round tied for 40th at 78.
No. 13 South Carolina and No. 39 Texas A&M are tied for the team lead with 5-over 293s, just one stroke ahead of No. 46 Florida State (+6). No. 12 Clemson is fourth with a 9-over 297, while No. 30 Virginia and Mercer round out the top five at +10 entering the second round of play. The Paladins (+14) are in seventh place after one day of competition.
Second-round play of the 54-hole tournament, which features two teams ranked in the top 25 and seven teams among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings, begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
The Paladins will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday from hole No. 10.
