Baseball Southern Conference

Weekend Baseball Schedule Continue to Evolve

Several Southern Conference schools have altered their weekend baseball schedules as a result of inclement weather in the Southeast. Be sure to check back with SoConSports.com for possible further updates.

Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – Friday's Appalachian State University baseball season opener at No. 25 Arkansas has been pushed back an hour from its originally scheduled start time. First pitch is now slated for 5 p.m. ET at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.

Appalachian State was originally scheduled to depart from Charlotte, N.C., for Fayetteville on Thursday evening but its flight was canceled due to the winter storm that slammed much of the eastern half of the United States this week. With the cancellation, the only option to try to get Appalachian to Baum Stadium in time for Friday's opener was to split the travel party among two flights scheduled to depart from Charlotte on Friday morning.

However, shortly before the Mountaineers arrived at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport early Friday morning, they learned that one of the two new flights was also canceled.

Therefore, Appalachian State will play Friday's game against the 25th-ranked Razorbacks with just two-thirds of its travel roster and only two coaches (head coach Billy Jones and pitching coach Michael Rogers) in uniform. The rest of the roster, coaches and support staff are now scheduled to depart Charlotte on Friday evening and arrive in Arkansas in plenty of time for the final two games of the three-game weekend series (Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and Sunday at 2 p.m. ET).

The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Winter weather and travel conditions have created a change in the schedule for the Homewood Suites Tournament presented by Charleston Crab House this weekend at Riley Park.

With Delaware unable to travel until Friday, Virginia Tech has been added to the tournament field to fill out the slate of games.

Instead of playing the Blue Hens, The Citadel will begin its 2014 season on Friday against the Hokies. That game will begin approximately 40 minutes following the opening contest of the tournament between Louisville and West Virginia at noon.

Saturday's schedule has also been altered. Virginia Tech will play Delaware at 11 a.m., followed by The Citadel's game with Louisville 40 minutes after the Hokies and Blue Hens wrap up. The day concludes with West Virginia taking on Delaware.

Sunday's schedule remains the same with Delaware playing Louisville at 10 a.m., and The Citadel meeting West Virginia 40 minutes after the conclusion.

Friday
Louisville vs. West Virginia, 12 p.m.

Virginia Tech vs. The Citadel (40 minutes after first game)

Saturday
Virginia Tech vs. Delaware, 11 a.m.

Louisville vs. The Citadel (40 minutes after first game)
West Virginia vs. Delaware (40 minutes after second game)

Sunday (original schedule)
Delaware vs. Louisville, 10 a.m.

West Virginia vs. The Citadel (40 minutes after first game)

Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson's season-opening baseball series against Buffalo at Wilson Field has been condensed to a Sunday doubleheader starting at noon due to the snow, head coach Dick Cooke announced Wednesday.

The Wildcats and Bulls were originally scheduled to play a three-game series Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.), but the heavy snows that blanketed the Carolinas have yet to melt. The teams are hoping the Carolina sun will help clear the field in time for Sunday.

Elon

ELON, N.C. – Due to the storm that disrupted much of the Southeast earlier this week, Elon baseball has adjusted its schedule for the opening weekend.

As of the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 14, the Phoenix will host Cincinnati on Sunday and Monday. The hope is to play two games on Sunday and a single game on Monday at Elon's Latham Park. Game times have not been set at this time.

Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman’s 2014 baseball season-opening game against Norfolk State, originally scheduled for Friday, has been rescheduled for noon Saturday at Latham Stadium on campus due to the snow and ice storm that struck the region, head coach Ron Smith has announced.

Furman will now play two games on Sunday, facing Xavier at 11 a.m. at Latham Stadium and Toledo in a 3 p.m. contest at Fluor Field.

Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The season opener for the Georgia Southern baseball team has been delayed until Saturday due to wintery weather conditions that hit most of the state of Georgia on Wednesday.

The Eagles will start a three-game series at the Georgia Bulldogs with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday and will wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team’s opening series with George Washington has been canceled in its entirety due to inclement weather from Winter Storm Pax. The Spartans and Colonials were both set to open their seasons this weekend at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG will now begin its 2014 campaign Tuesday, Feb. 18, when the Blue and Gold hosts Atlantic Coast Conference member Duke. First pitch at the UNCG Baseball Stadium is slated for 4 p.m.

Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team will open the 2014 season by playing host to Valparaiso in a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field this weekend.

The Friday season opener has been moved from its original start time of 6 p.m. CST to 4 p.m. due to expected inclement weather. The teams will also play Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Winter Storm Pax continued to affect the season-opening weekend for the Western Carolina Catamount baseball team on Thursday. Due to both weather and travel issues, the home series against Ohio University has been cancelled.

Instead, coming off the program's 12th SoCon regular season championship - and the 21st combined league title in school history - Western Carolina will now open its 2014 season with a three-game series in Starkville, Miss., against the nationally ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The 2014 season opener is slated for a 7:30 p.m. EST / 6:30 p.m. CST first pitch on Friday, followed by a 5 p.m. EST / 4 p.m. CST start on Saturday. The series against the Bulldogs will wrap up on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. EST / 1:30 pm CST.

Despite working all day Thursday to remove the heavy, wet snow off the playing surface at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium, field conditions were still unfavorable even 48 hours out from the rescheduled opener. Adding to the weather-related issues are forecasts for a smaller round of precipitation - mostly rain before changing to a wintry mixture then mostly snow - on Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, prompting athletic department officials, in conjunction with Ohio, to cancel the series.

Mississippi State originally had a three-game, season-opening series scheduled against Hofstra scheduled at Dudy Noble Field. However, travel issues because of heavy snow in the Mid-Atlantic States prevented the Pride from getting to Mississippi.

Wofford
