Western Carolina Competes at Bob Bollock Classic
Clemson, S.C. – Western Carolina men’s and women’s track and field teams used Bob Pollock Classic to improve their rankings in the Southern Conference standings at the two-day meet hosted by Clemson.

On the men’s side, Jeffery Hendricks finished fifth with a time of 6.86 in the 60m seeded dash prelims.  In the finals, Hendricks slipped to sixth after a time of 6.91.  Hendricks; time has him ranked third on the Southern Conference performance list.

In the 60m open dash Jermaine Lewis finished in fourth after an identical time of 7.05 in the prelims and finals.  Lewis later went on to take eighth in the 200m after a time of 23.01 – a season best mark. 

Earl Rahming, continued his streak of top ten finishes in the 400m race, slipping into the top ten with a time of 50.37 for tenth in the 400m seeded race. Rahming has finished in the top ten in all five indoor meets this season.  In the open 400m, Adrian Ortado and Demari Boswell took fourth and fifth respectively after times of 50.74 and 50.94.  Ortado’s time of 50.74 was a new personal best mark for the sophomore.

Two Catamounts took spots in the top ten in the 800m seeded race with Aaron Harris and Jamie finishing in seventh and ninth after times of 1.56.6 and 4:25.6.

JC Cornett ran the best time of a Catamount this season in the mile with a time of 4:20.6 good enough for eighth place.  Cornett is now ranked fifth out of all mile runners in the conference.

Travis Alfaro took fourth in the 5,000m seeded race after a time of 15:03.4 – the lowest time in the 5,000m in the conference in five meets.  In the 5,000m open race, Clay Howarth took the top podium spot with a time of 15.29.4 – his best time in two 5,000m races on the season.

Abraham Faison qualified for the 60m hurdles’ finals race with a time of 8.28 for eighth in the prelims.  Faison held his eighth place spot in the finals after a time of 8.28.

In the distance medley relay, WCU’s team of Michael Cornwell, Marquis Bailey, Jamie Bigby, and Cornett picked up fourth place getting the baton around the track in time of 10:37.8.

Christian Carswell took sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.96m, while Keith Leonard and Dustin Triplett finished in fifth and seventh respectively after heights of 4.50m each in the pole vault.  Leonard’s fifth place finish was his best podium finish of the season.

David Johnson had two top ten finishes during the meet with a fifth place finish in the triple jump after a distance of 14.32m and a ninth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.81m.  Johnson, who already leads the SoCon with the best triple jump, now sits in fourth in the long jump.

Jared Johnson finished in the top ten In both throws events with a fifth place mark of 16.55m in the weight throw and tenth place finish with a distance of 14.11m in the shot put.  He has finished in the top ten in all five indoor meets in the weight throw and shot put this season.

For the women, Tayla Carter qualified for the finals in the 60m seeded race after a time of 7.60 for sixth.  In the finals, Cater improved her time, 7.54, and podium spot, fifth.  Carter added another top ten finish as she won the 200m open race with a time of 25.11.

Kinnari Badger ran her best time of the season in the 60m crossing the finish line in eight seconds good enough for ninth place in the 60m open race.

Genevieve Emrick continues to build on her strong season with a personal best time of 55.98 in the 400m seeded race for fourth place.  Emrick now leads all runners in the Southern Conference in the 400m.  Corina Archie-McMillan followed with a time of 57.65 for eighth place in the 400m seeded race.

Hayley Tomlinson picked up a third place finished in the 800m seeded race with a time of 2:16.3, while Lena Elliott finished in fourth place crossing the line with a time of 2:16.8.  Jocelyn Keen was the third Catamount in the top ten in the race taking sixth place after a time of 2:20.3.

In the 3,000m seeded race, Aleshia Reese took fourth with a time of 10:42.1, while Kaitlyn Shelter won the 3,000m open race with a time of 11:06.9 – a new personal best by two seconds.

Xaveria Bass took seventh qualifying her for the finals in the 60m hurdles seeded race.  In the finals Bass clocked a time of 8.81 seconds placing her in fifth and setting a new personal mark for the junior.  She also moved into second on the SoCon’s 60m hurdles performance list.  In the 60m hurdles open race, Shermell Wilkins took third in the prelims with a time of 9.06 for a new personal record.  Wilkins slipped to fourth in the finals after a time of 9.16.  Wilkins time in the prelims moved her into sixth on the SoCon performance list.  Kayla Williams just missed qualifying for the finals as she finished in ninth place after a time of 9.46.

Bass added a second place finish to her meet resume after a height of 1.65m in the high jump.  Anisia Starege picked up third place clearing a height of 1.65m on her third attempt. 

Alisha Bradshaw, who has finished in the top ten in all five meets this indoor season, took second in the shot put with a distance of 14.04m for a new season-high and fifth in the weight throw after a distance of 17.74m.  Bradshaw is ranked second the in the SoCon in the shot put and continues to hold the top spot in the weight throw.  Hailey Cook picked up her fourth top ten finish in the shot put finishing eighth after a distance of 12.86m.

 

Elon Competes at Penn State National Invitational
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Behind a couple of personal indoor bests from sophomore Jennifer Esposito and freshman Kimberly Johansen, the Elon University track and field team had a strong showing on the final day of the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 1, inside the Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track facility.

Esposito ran a time of 57.16 in the 400-meter dash, beating her previous personal indoor best of 58.06 that she set on Jan. 18 at the Liberty Open. That mark is now the third-best performance in school history in the event as the Mansfield, Mass., native was 15th overall in the race.

Johansen also clocked the third-best performance in school history in her event, the 800-meters, as she finished with a time of 2:14.82, winning her heat and finishing 10th overall. Sydney Griffin had a good showing in the 200-meters with a time of 25.38.

In the shot put, senior Charlise Morgan garnered a top-five standing in the event after a toss of 47’1.5” (14.36m), just missing out on her own school-record of 47’4.25” (14.43m). Freshman Breanna Warren also threw well with a throw of 42’1” (12.84m) in her first ever-collegiate indoor meet, the fourth-best performance in program history.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay team of Bria Bell, Jennifer Pash, Veronica Luedke and Esposito ran the third-fastest performance in school history with a time of 3:52.70. The group finished 11th overall in the event.

Other members of the Phoenix distance team also competed at the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend. Tereza Novotna stood out in the one-mile run with a time of 5:04.95 and a fourth place standing at that meet.

Elon University track and field senior Allyson Oram set a new school-record in the 5,000-meters to highlight the Phoenix’s first day at the prestigious Penn State National Invitational on Friday evening, Jan. 31, inside the Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track facility.

Oram broke her own indoor school-record by nearly five seconds with a time of 17:14.44 and was second overall in the 5,000-meter Invitational race, but was the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line. Freshman Elyse Bierut clocked in second-fastest time in program history with a time 17:38.98 and was fifth overall in the regular 5,000-meter race..

In the weight throw, senior Charlise Morgan was the top finisher for the Phoenix with a throw of 50’6” (15.39m), 12th overall. Fellow senior Kayleigh Birks was 14th with a mark of 50’4.75” (15.36m).

In other first day events, sophomore Sydney Griffin had a qualifying time of 8.78 in the 60-meter hurdles for Elon. Freshman Carrie Abraham leaped a distance of 17’3.5” in the long jump and was 20th overall in the event.

 

Georgia Southern Competes at Bob Pollack Classic
CLEMSON, S.C. – Sherrill McFarlane posted the second-best time in Georgia Southern history in her first-ever 400m indoor race Saturday at the Bob Pollack Classic at Clemson. Her 56.04 time in the 400m is behind only record holder Marlo Mincey, the Eagles’ current Head Coach. Junior Jasmin Walker ran a 7.62, a personal best, in the 60m Dash Saturday for the fourth-best time in the program’s history.

A graduate student from Brooklyn, N.Y., McFarlane now has her name on three of Georgia Southern’s top-five track lists as she owns the 800m record and is second on both the indoor 400m and Mile Run. She also has the second-best time in the 5,000m race in Eagle Cross Country history and is a member of the 4x400m Relay team as well.


After her first Pentathlon of the season Friday, Ashleigh Rasheed came back Saturday with a personal best in the Triple Jump at 11.88m (38’11.75) on her second attempt. Rasheed continues to make strides after an 11.73m distance just two weeks ago.

Georgia Southern wrapped up the Bob Pollack Invitational with the 4X400m Relay as the quartet of Dana Edwards, McFarlane, Sadia Yansenah, and Asha Stegall registered the best time of the season Saturday at 3:50.07. That time, nearly two full seconds better than the Eagles’ last performance, helps them close in on the program’s top-three best times.

Freshman Asha Stegall posted the fifth-best time in Georgia Southern history with a 57.10 time in the 400m Dash on the first day of competition at the Bob Pollack Classic at Clemson. Stegall’s personal best in the race earned her a first-place finish. Overall on Friday, January 31st, the Eagles set 13 personal bests with Jordan Fordham claiming a top finish in the 60m Dash with a 7.70, improving on her 7.70 from earlier in the day.


Fordham had the best time of the season in the 200m Dash with a 25.36, just .12 away from breaking into the Georgia Southern all-time top five in that event. In the 60m Hurdles, Lauren Toomer cranked it up in the finals and took .16 seconds off her preliminary time for a second-place finish with a 9.10. Teammate Dana Edwards went 9.17 in the early round, then broke that personal best again with a 9.14 in the finals for third place.

The Eagles posted solid times for personal bests in the 800m with Cherrelle King and Leigha Long both setting standards that race. 

The personal records were not limited to only those on the track. Ashleigh Rasheed, in her first Pentathlon of the season set her personal best in the Long Jump (5.29m/17-4.25) and tied her PR in the High Jump (1.55/5-1) as part of the composite event.

Senior Ashley Thomas continued to move her marks in the weight throw with a 15.22m distance, just shy of 50 feet. Kelsey Arnold flirted with the 16 meter mark in the weight throw Friday after setting a personal best in the Eagles’ last competition. Taylor Johnson’s first Long Jump of the season resulted in a personal best for the sophomore.

 

Appalachian State Competes at Hilton Garden Invite
WINSTON SALEM, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field completed the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday.

The Mountaineers competed against dozens of teams, including SoCon opponents Elon, UNCG and Samford.

Kyle McFoy notched a third-place finish in the 3,000m run for the Mountaineers, recording a time of 8:29.06. The time was a personal record.

Michael Ellis placed eighth in the 5,000m with a time of 15:23.05.

Appalachian had two pole vaulters finish in the top-ten as Matt Layne took sixth and Thomas took eight with heights of 14:05.25.

Samuel Allen rounded out the top-ten finishes for the Mountaineers, placing ninth in the high jump with a jump of 6-04.75.

Appalachian State University women's track and field finished the Hilton Garden Invite on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Mountaineers competed at the JDL Fast Track against dozens of teams including SoCon opponents Elon, UNCG and Samford.

Kayla Scneider recorded a sixth-place finish and a personal best in the 3,000m with a time of 10:08.91, while Katie Cagle finished seventh with a time of 10:11.42.

Justine Stocks recorded two top-ten finishes for the Apps, placing sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:17.11 and placing seventh in the mile run with a time of 5:08.13.

High jumper Makayla Roten notched a second-place finish with a height of 5-7.00, followed by Mary Theresa Montgomery, finishing sixth with a jump of 5-5.00. Libby Florence placed eighth for the Mountaineers in the high jump with a jump of 5-5.00.

Cassie Crawford finished first for Appalachian in the pole vault event with a third-place finish and a height of 11-11.75.

Briana Tate led the throwers this weekend, recording a second-place finish in the weight throw with a throw of 17.16m. Jocelyn Parnell followed with a throw of 16.78m, good enough for a fifth-place finish.

Tate also posted a fifth-place finish in the shot put for the Apps with a distance of 13.78m.

 

Chattanooga Competes at Tennessee State Invitational
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s Distance Medley Relay Teams placed second and fifth at the Tennessee State Invitational Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

The men’s A team finished second in the DMR with a time of 10:27.60 led off by newcomer Harry Smithers followed by Marquis Carter, Trevor Janssen and anchored by senior Nathan Wanuch. The B team was led off by senior Mark Cole with DeQuantez Sandifer making a return to the track. Matthew Marshall and Patrick O’Brien ran the final two legs.

In the opening leg of the event, Cole was outdistancing Smithers and Sandifer maintained the lead for the B team before Janssen stepped up and passed teammate Matthew Marshall to put the A team ahead. Wanuch powered the A team over the final leg to lead UTC to a second place finish. The B team placed fifth with a time of 10:39.51.

James Stovall, a member of the Southern Conference champion football team at UTC, placed 10th in his first collegiate attempt at the triple jump with a distance of 14.00m.
