Wofford 6, USC Upstate 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women’s tennis team defeated USC Upstate, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center.
The Terriers win their second straight match to improve to 2-0 on the season with the win and the Spartans fall to 0-5 with the loss.
Wofford earned the first point making a comeback in doubles. After the Terriers dropped the No. 2 match, the top duo of seniors Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson defeated Taylor Cohen and Talia Rojas, 6-3 to tie it up at one. No. 3 doubles pair of sophomore Mareli Sanchez and freshman Taylor Carlson had to comeback from a 4-1 deficit to win and clinch the doubles point defeating Anna Zoske and Lindsey Buenger, 6-4.
In singles play, Paulson claimed the first point at the No. 3 position defeating Zoske in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 and Carlson defeated Buenger, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 6 position to earn the second point. Clinching the match and scoring the fourth point for the Terriers was the freshman No. 5 player Kalli Karas who won, 6-1, 6-3, against Sarah Vande Berg.
The women’s tennis team returns to action tomorrow when they travel to face UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. The Terriers return home on Friday, February 7, as they host East Tennessee State University at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
Samford 6, Middle Tennessee 1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team continued its impressive play in the young 2014 spring season Friday as the Bulldogs reeled off a dominant 6-1 non-conference victory against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders held indoors at the Samford Tennis Complex.
Samford (2-0) swept the doubles point Friday and earned an early 1-0 advantage over Middle Tennessee (1-1). In singles play, the Bulldogs received quick straight-set victories from No. 72-ranked Stephanie N'tcha, Emilay Mallory and Lauren Caballero to secure the team win.
Additionally, Samford's Yasmeen Ebada and Jessica Northcutt both tallied three-set triumphs over their Blue Raider counterparts on courts No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
The Bulldogs' Caballero, Ebada, N'tcha and Northcutt all improved to 2-0 in singles play this season as Samford boasts a near-perfect 11-1 record in the competition
In doubles play this season, the Bulldogs have yet to lose a single match.
Chattanooga 7, Lipscomb 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team advances to 2-0 for the 2014 spring season with a 7-0 win over Lipscomb at the McCallie School tonight.
Chattanooga took the first point of the match with a clean sweep in doubles action, losing no more than three games against any of its Lipscomb opponents.
Freshman Rachele Gazzola and junior Claire Mulyadi set the tone with their win 6-0 win over Djuknic and Troxel at No.3.
UTC’s No. 2 team of sophomore Kelsey Coots and senior Alexa Flynn followed with 6-2 a victory over Kent and Kromer earning the women’s tennis team a 1-0 advantage going into singles play.
“I thought we came out really strong in doubles and jumped on them,” head coach Jeff Clark said. “That was good to get a doubles point like we did.”
Both juniors Kaylene Chadwell and Claire Mulyadi decisively won their singles matches tonight with back-to-back 6-0 sets.
“I thought in particular Claire Mulyadi had a great match tonight. She beat a strong player, and beat her pretty convincingly.”
Sophomore Kelsey Coots rallied for a 6-4, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) win over Djuknic in a super tiebreaker, finishing off Lipscomb 7-0.
