Gardner-Webb’s Trott wins 165-pound title at Cleveland State Open
CLEVELAND – Austin Trott dominated the field to win the title at 165 pounds, pacing a strong showing for Gardner-Webb on Saturday at the 2014 Cleveland State Open.
Trott continued a strong start to the season near the Great Lakes, whipping his competition in each round and improving his overall mark to 13-2 on the season.
Trott took major decisions over Buffalo’s Derek Holcomb (13-3), Eastern Michigan’s Dakota Juarez (9-0) and Campbell’s Paul Duggan (8-0) to get into the semifinals, then needed just 51 seconds to pin Ohio wrestler Austin Reese.
He capped the evening with another quick pin, putting Michigan’s Garrett Sutton away in just 1:02.
Ryan Mosley finished second at 149 pounds, going 4-1 with major-decision wins over Bloomsburg’s Brendan Colbert (9-1) and Notre Dame’s George McGuire (16-2). He fell to Kent State’s Michael Depalma in the title bout by a 10-2 margin.
Cortez Starkes also placed in the top four, taking fourth at 125 pounds. He pinned Bloomsburg’s Jon Haas to bounce back after a loss, advancing to the third-place bout. He fell to American’s David Terao in that final effort.
Gardner-Webb took 26 wrestlers to the Cleveland State event, and seven men came away with at least three wins. A total of 10 wrestlers captured at least two wins on Saturday, including a pair of wins in the early going by 174-pound NCAA hopeful Hunter Gamble – who logged his first action on the mat since mid-November.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs will break for Christmas, then will get back to tournament action on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the traditionally strong Southern Scuffle.
Gardner-Webb returns home on Jan. 9 to host Binghamton at 7 p.m. in its next dual match.
Campbell’s Stewart wins 141 title at Cleveland State Open
CLEVELAND – Campbell wrestling took the mat in the Cleveland State Open on Saturday afternoon, the team's fourth open match of the season. Redshirt freshman Luke Stewart placed first in the 141-pound bracket, wrestling as an unattached competitor.
SIUE splits pair of Saturday duals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – SIUE wrestling earned a split in its two matches Saturday at Indiana. The Cougars dropped a 28-12 decision to host Indiana and routed Manchester 48-3.
SIUE's Chris Johnson and Angelo Silvestro were the lone wrestlers to win twice.
Johnson bested Indiana's Garrett Goldman 3-1 in a sudden-victory match. The Cougar heavyweight then defeated Manchester Dustin Kult 7-2.
Silvestro blanked Indiana's Sean Brown 4-0 and won by technical fall over Manchester's Eric Dan 16-1.
The Indiana match was much closer than the final score indicated. SIUE dropped three matches by two points or fewer.
SIUE’s matchup with Manchester was much more decisive. The Cougars collected pins by Karsten Van Velsor, Erik Travers, Jake Residori, Derek Nagel and Matthew McCliments. Travers claimed the fastest pin of the day with a 1:05 win over Manchester's Bryce Roberts.
The Cougars have their final dual matches of 2014 next Friday at Missouri. SIUE takes on Kent State, host Missouri and South Dakota State in Columbia, Missouri.
