ETSU’s Ramalho named All-South Region
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Southern Conference Player of the Year Joao Ramalho, who led ETSU with 24 points during the 2014 campaign, has been named to the NSCAA All-South Region Third Team.
ETSU has seen at least one player earn all-region honors each of the past five seasons.
Ramalho led the Southern Conference with 11 goals this season, matching David Geno's program single-season record.
Ramalho is currently ranked 14th in NCAA Division I for goals per game (0.61). The Monte Santo, Brazil, native also dished out two assists this year for the Bucs.
Furman places two on all-region teams
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region Second Team and defender Kevin Edelmann earned NSCAA All-South Third Team honors, it was announced on Wednesday.
Lissek, a native of Sewau, Germany, posted a 0.59 goals against average and 12 shutouts in 21 starts to earn second-team honors for the second straight season. The junior and All-Southern Conference choice made two saves in a penalty kick shootout to lead Furman past UAB in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and posted a second-round shutout of nationally ranked Washington before the Huskies advanced on penalty kicks. Lissek’s 12 shutouts established a new Furman and SoCon single-season record.
Edelmann helped anchor a Furman defense that surrendered just 14 goals in 22 matches as the Paladins posted a 12-5-5 record, claimed a SoCon tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament’s round of 32. The sophomore from Koblenz, Germany, notched his only goal of the season in an October win over ETSU.
Lissek and Edelmann helped the Paladins compile a 7-1-2 record in their final 10 matches of the 2014 season.
Mercer’s Bagrou, Ranjitsingh named all-region
MACON, Ga. – Will Bagrou and Greg Ranjitsingh were named to the NSCAA All-South Region second and third teams, respectively, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Bagrou and Ranjitsingh helped to lead Mercer to a 14-7 record, a Southern Conference regular-season championship and a SoCon tournament runner-up finish. The Bears set a program record with 14 wins in a single season, while earning the first SoCon championship in Mercer history.
Bagrou was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year, while Ranjitsingh was the SoCon Goalkeeper of the Year. Both were named to the SoCon All-Conference First Team and the All-Tournament Team.
Bagrou finished the season with 29 points off 12 goals and five assists. The freshman led the SoCon in total goals and total points and finished the season ranked No. 9 and No. 11 nationally in those respective categories. Bagrou also tallied five game-winning goals, leading the conference and ranking 12th in the country. The Dacula, Ga., native also finished in the top 20 nationally in goals per game (0.57) and points per game (1.38). Bagrou earned two spots in Mercer’s single-season record books in 2014, ranking sixth in goals and eighth in points.
Ranjitsingh anchored a Mercer defense that recorded 10 shutouts on the season. The senior from Pickering, Ontario, led the SoCon in total saves (106) and save percentage (.841), while finishing the season No. 3 and No. 9 nationally. Ranjitsingh also ranks 20th in the country in saves per game (5.05) and was second in the conference in goals-against average (.926). He finished his career as the Mercer record-holder in career GAA (1.14) and shutouts (27), while ranking third in saves (363).
Bagrou and Ranjitsingh are two of eight SoCon players to be named to the NSCAA South All-Region teams, while Bagrou is one of just two freshmen to be honored.
Wofford lands three on all-region squads
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three members of the Wofford College men’s soccer team were named to the All-South Region teams as announced by the NSCAA headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior defender Forrest Lasso and sophomore forward Matthew Aurednik were both named to the All-South Region First Team, while junior forward Nestor Jaramillo was named to All-South Region Third Team. Lasso was named to the All-South Third Team in 2013, while Aurednik and Jaramillo earn their first All-Region honors this season.
Lasso, a Raleigh, N.C. native, headed the back line for Wofford, starting at center back in 17 games for the Terriers. Aside from his impact on the Terrier defense, the senior scored two goals – with 53.8 percent of his shots on frame – while assisting three scores for seven points during the season.
Aurednik started in 17 games as well for the Terriers. The Lexington, S.C., native paced the Terriers’ scoring efforts, netting 10 goals during the season – trailing only Mercer’s Will Bagrou and ETSU’s Joao Ramalho in the Southern Conference. Aurednik’s 10 goals ranked 23rd in NCAA Division I this season. Aurednik also scored three game-winning goals – third best in the conference. Aurednik’s 0.59 goal per game average ranked only behind Ramalho in the Southern Conference.
Jaramillo started every game at forward for Wofford this season. The junior from Lexington, S.C., led the Terriers in total assists (6), total points (22), assists per game (0.33) and points per game (1.22). Jaramillo’s total assists and assists per game were also the best in the conference. Jaramillo also led the NCAA in assists in a single game this season after assisting on four goals against VMI on Oct. 11.
