App?s Parisi Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State senior Dominic Parisi has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 26 to Dec. 9. The selection is made by the league office.

Parisi was 3-0 with three pins during the last two weeks to earn the honor and move to 15-3 overall (6-1 dual) on the season.

In the Mountaineers’ 22-21 setback to North Carolina on Nov. 30, Parisi pinned the Tar Heels’ Cody Karns in 4:31 in the 125-pound weight class to get Appalachian State out to an early 6-0 lead. That dual was the only SoCon action the week of Thanksgiving.

Appalachian State hosted Ohio University and Belmont Abbey on Friday, Dec. 5, with Parisi earning pins in both bouts. In the Apps’ 26-15 loss to Ohio, the Concord, N.C., native stuck 2013 NCAA qualifier KeVon Powell in the first period (1:28). He followed that up with a pin of Belmont Abbey’s Patrick Mestrez in 4:42 as the Mountaineers picked up the 42-4 dual win.

Parisi’s honor, along with Denzel Dejournette’s consecutive awards on Nov. 19 and 26, give the Mountaineers three straight SoCon Wrestlers of the Week for the first time in school history.

Appalachian State (2-5) is back in action when it heads to Raleigh, N.C., for a dual with NC State on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m.

Also nominated: Matthew Frisch (The Citadel), Anthony Elias (Davidson) and Austin Trott (Gardner-Webb).
