Davidson downs Belmont Abbey
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team won six of the 10 bouts en route to a 22-12 win over Belmont Abbey at Belk Arena on Friday night.
Davidson improved to 3-1 on the year, while Belmont Abbey fell to 0-2 overall.
Davidson opened the meet with wins at 125 pounds, as Philip Elias put the Wildcats on the board after registering a 6-5 decision over Belmont Abbey's Patrick Mestrez. Freshman Dustin Runzo extended his team's lead with a major decision 10-2 over Collin Godbout at 133.
At 141 pounds, Belmont Abbey's William James posted a 4-1 decision over Davidson's James McCord, pulling the Crusaders to win four in the team scores. The Wildcats rebounded with a win at 149 pounds, as senior Kevin Birmingham pinned Kane Price at the 6:08 mark for his fourth consecutive fall of the year.
The Crusaders edged closer with decisions at 157 pounds and 165 pounds, setting themselves up for a potential comeback. Nathaniel Powers halted Belmont Abbey's run, however, with a 6-2 decision over Bo Ransom at 174 pounds. Belmont Abbey rebounded with its fourth win at 184 pounds, but it was the last victory the visitors would get.
Ian Solcz secured the win for Davidson, however, earning a 12-5 decision over Kelly Baker at 196 pounds to move the score to 19-12. Ed Isola finished things off with a 3-2 overtime win at 285 pounds.
Davidson will return to action next week at the Wolfpack Open at NC State.
