SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State sophomore Denzel Dejournette has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 19-25, earning the award for the second straight week. The selection is made by the league office.

Dejournette went 5-0 last week, winning the heavyweight division at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa., to help the Mountaineers to a sixth-place finish in the 14-team field.

The Winston-Salem, N.C., native picked up four decisions and a pin en route to winning a heavyweight title for the second straight weekend. Dejournette also did so at the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, Calif., last week.

On Sunday, Dejournette opened his day with a 6-1 win over Rider’s Andrew Marr. He followed that up with a 9-4 decision over Eastern Michigan’s Gage Hutchison before pinning South Dakota State’s Alex Macki in 2:10. In the semifinals, Dejournette shut out Stanford’s Nathan Butler, 2-0, and he topped Harvard’s David Ng in the final by a 6-3 count.

Dejournette remained undefeated on the season, moving to 14-0, and jumped four spots to No. 13 nationally at heavyweight in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) rankings. He remained No. 16 in The Open Mat rankings.

With Dejournette’s back-to-back weekly honors, Appalachian State has earned consecutive awards for the first time since Austin Trotman and Kyle Blevins did so in January 2011. Dejournette becomes the first Mountaineer to claim consecutive honors.

Appalachian State (1-3) is back in action when it hosts North Carolina for a dual in Boone, N.C., on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m.

Also nominated: Aaron Walker (The Citadel), Ian Solcz (Davidson), Derek Nagel (SIUE), Shawn Greevy (Chattanooga) and Shabaka Jones (VMI).
