MACON, Ga. – After capturing the Southern Conference tournament title on Sunday afternoon, the Mercer women’s soccer team learned its postseason fate during Monday evening’s NCAA Selection Show. The NCAA announced Mercer will head to Gainesville, Fla., to face No. 8 Florida in the opening round on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m.
The Gators, which currently occupy the No. 8 spot in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Top 25, earned one of four No. 2 seeds in the 64-team field. The winner of Sunday’s match will advance to play the winner of San Diego State and California.
The Bears earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by defeating Samford 2-1 in the Southern Conference Championship. Mercer is 14-5-2 on the season, marking a new program record for single-season wins.
Florida is a familiar NCAA tournament foe for the Bears, as Mercer previously faced the SEC power in the opening round of the 2010 event. Florida triumphed 3-0 in that match, which marked Mercer’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament.
The Gators are 14-4-1 overall and went 9-2 in Southeastern Conference play. The squad boasts a 7-0 record at home this season.
Tickets for Sunday’s first round game are $7 for adults and $3 for students.
