Dunbar declared winner of Bearcat Classic, Wofford tied for eighth
MAINEVILLE, Ohio – Wofford women’s golf senior Lauren Dunbar earned her first collegiate tournament championship, winning the Cincinnati Bearcat Classic on Tuesday at TPC River’s Bend.
Dunbar was the leader of the 97-player field heading into Tuesday after carding a 1-under-par 71 in Monday’s opening round. The final round never came to completion, as heavy rain made the course unplayable with most of the field through 16 holes. Therefore, Dunbar was awarded the individual championship in what turned out to be an 18-hole tournament.
The medalist honors are the second of Dunbar’s collegiate career. She shot an ever-par 72 in an 18-hole match against Radford as a freshman in the fall of 2011. Dunbar’s tournament victory marks the ninth time in program history a Terrier has won a tournament title.
The Bearcat Classic was originally scheduled for 54 holes. Two rounds were supposed to be contested on Monday until heavy precipitation canceled the second 18. It was then determined the tournament would be shortened to 36 holes, with the final 18 to be contested on Tuesday, but Mother Nature took that round out of play as well.
Dunbar battled through Monday’s rain-soaked first round to come in as the only player under par. The senior from Columbia, S.C., carded four birdies and posted a clean 2-under-par 34 on the back nine. All four of Dunbar’s birdies came on par-4s, as did all three of her bogeys.
The Terriers earned a tie for eighth in the 15-team field with Xavier and Murray State. The Terriers carded a 26-over 314 and finished just seven strokes behind tournament champion and host Cincinnati.
The Wofford women’s golf team returns to play as host of the Terrier Intercollegiate. The tournament is scheduled for two days, beginning Monday, Oct. 20.
