Dunbar leads Bearcat Classic, Wofford tied for eighth

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – Wofford’s Lauren Dunbar shot a 1-under-par 71 and leads all competitors through the first round of the Bearcat Classic, which teed off on Monday and is hosted by the University of Cincinnati at TPC River’s Bend.

Dunbar battled through a rain-soaked first round to come in as the only player under par. The senior from Columbia, S.C., carded four birdies and posted a clean 2-under-par 34 on the back nine. All four of Dunbar’s birdies came on par-4s, as did all three of her bogeys. She leads a field of 97 into Tuesday’s final round.

The Bearcat Classic was originally scheduled for 54 holes but was cut to 36 after heavy rain and lightning suspended first-round play for approximately 90 minutes. The final 18 holes of the 15-team tournament will be contested on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Dunbar will begin on the par-5 eighth.

The Wofford women’s golf team is tied for eighth with Xavier and Murray State. The Terriers carded a 26-over 314 and sit just seven strokes back of host Cincinnati, who lead the field at 19-over 307.

Dunbar accounted for four of the team’s seven birdies on the day. Freshman Nicole Chin had one of the three other birdies and is tied for 31st at 7-over 79. Sophomore Katy Funk and junior Emiley Pagrabs each came in at 10-over 82 and are tied for 56th.

Rounding out the six Terriers in the field were senior Elizabeth Thompson (+20) and freshman Lela Oakley (+22).
