Furman finishes third at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (E) fired a 71 to tie for fourth place individually as the Lady Paladin golf team concluded the 2014 fall season Tuesday with a third-place team finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-72, 5,972-yard Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Totland, who was named to the all-tournament team, recorded consecutive birdies twice in Tuesday's final round, birdieing No. 9 and 10 then No. 17 and 18 to conclude the round 1-under, four strokes behind individual medalist Lena Schaeffner (-4) of Coastal Carolina, who carded a 68-73-71=212 for the win.
Coastal Carolina (+2) took the team victory by 12 strokes over No. 25 GRU Augusta (+14), while the 30th-ranked Paladins (+15) recorded the low round of the day, 289, to finish in third place. South Florida placed fourth (+27), while No. 39 Kansas (+33) rounded out the top five.
Paladin junior Valentina Romero (+4) recorded a team-high five birdies on Tuesday, including back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and No. 11, to card an even 72 and tie for ninth, while freshman Reona Hirai (+6) birdied No. 5 and No. 17 to shoot a 71 in the final round and tie for 16th. Freshman Alice Chen (+7) eagled the par-4 No. 18 to finish Tuesday's round with a 1-over 73, tying or 20th, and senior Laura DeMarco (+17) tied for 57th place after birdieing No. 12.
The Paladins will open the 2015 spring season Feb. 13-15 at the Florida State Match Up in Tallahassee, Fla.
Chattanooga ties for eighth at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Isabella Loza led the Chattanooga Mocs to a tie for eighth at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course. Loza’s three-day tally of 221 is a new career low, besting her 223 in the 2013 SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational.
Loza shot consistent rounds of 74, 74 and 73 for her 5-over-par score. She ended up tied for 12th.
The Mocs tied with Kansas State in eighth at 906. Their 305 Tuesday was two better than the Wildcats’ 307. The duo finished one ahead of ETSU (907) in 10th and six clear of Xavier in 11th at 912. Campbell was one ahead in seventh at 905.
Megan Woods and Cris Perez added 77s to the score, while Emily McLennan turned in a 78. Agathe Sauzon had the drop score with an 80. The freshman duo of Woods (228) and Perez (235) also had new season best totals.
Coastal Carolina was the wire-to-wire winner, shooting 866. No. 25 GRU Augusta came in second at 878, with Furman one behind in third at 879. The Chanticleers’ Lena Schaeffner claimed medalist honors at 4-under (212). Her final-round 71 held off hard-charging runner-up Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas. The Jayhawk closed with a 68 to end up one off the pace at 3-under (213).
ETSU finishes 10th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The ETSU women’s golf team ended the fall portion of its 2014-15 schedule on Tuesday, wrapping up play in the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Course with a 10th-place showing out of the 20-team field.
Junior Vivienne Chin – the most experienced player on the young Buccaneers’ roster – led the way for ETSU on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 25th after firing a team-best score of 1-over-par 73 during Tuesday’s third and final round.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 33rd by freshman Dominika Czudkova, who carded a round of 2-over 74 on the final day, while freshman Allyson Dunn and sophomore Linda Dobele both finished tied for 39th. Dobele posted a 4-over-par 78, while Dunn finished the day with a 79.
Coastal Carolina dominated the team competition, winning by 12 strokes over GRU Augusta thanks to a team score of 866. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina’s Lena Schaeffner finished the event at 4-under-par 212 and bested Kansas’ Yupapom Kawinpakom by just one stroke for the individual title.
Western Carolina finishes 17th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Western Carolina women’s golf team was unable to improve upon its finishing position in the final event of the fall semester on Tuesday as the Catamounts came home 17th at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 5,972-yard Turtle Point course at the Kiawah Island Resort.
The Catamounts carded team rounds of 314 on Sunday, 308 on Monday and 318 on Tuesday’s final 18 holes for the three-round tally of 940.
WCU was led by redshirt junior Kristin Swindell, who finished tied for 46th overall with a three-day total of 231. The Bradenton, Fla., native followed up her two consecutive rounds of 76 with a 79 on Tuesday, charting 11 pars against seven bogeys for the 7-over-par score. All told, Swindell led the Catamounts with 35 pars over the 54-hole tournament.
Sophomore Ashley Thompson and junior Kim Mitchell placed in a tie for 75th overall with scores of 238 at the end of play. Thompson capped her tournament with the 7-over-par 79 round, carding birdies on the par-5 No. 10 and par-4 18th to advance four positions in the final order. Mitchell had seven bogeys and a double bogey against 10 pars over her final 18 holes, finishing with a round of 81.
Rounding WCU’s side was sophomore Olivia Landino, who placed in a tie for 82nd overall, also shooting 79 in the final round for a three-day tally of 239. The Hermitage, Pa., product birdied three holes over the final 18, giving her a team-best six birdies in the event. Junior Mariah Hopkins, who shot 78 and 85, was forced to withdraw from Tuesday’s final round due to injury prior to the start of the final round.
Playing unattached as an individual, sophomore Bethany Galloway carded the lowest final-round score for WCU, shooting 5-over-par 77 to finish tied with Landino in 82nd overall.
Western Carolina will break for the winter, returning to action with its first competition of the spring semester in early February as the Catamounts head for Florida for the UCF Challenge in Orlando.
UNCG finishes 19th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team concluded its fall schedule Tuesday afternoon with the third and final round of the annual Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Kiawah Island Resort Turtle Point Golf Course hosted by the College of Charleston.
The Spartans return to action Feb. 7 at the Lady Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga.
The Spartans finished the tournament in 19th place overall with a 54-hole score of 970 (326-320-324). Coastal Carolina led from start to finish in the event to claim the overall title with a 2-over-par 866 (282-290-294), winning by 12 strokes over GRU Augusta 878 (288-296-294). Individually, Lena Schaeffner of Coastal Carolina won the event with a 4-under-par 212 (68-73-71), while Yapaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas was second at 3-under-par 213 (69-76-68).
Sophomore Kristin Powers carded the Spartans’ low round Tuesday with a 6-over-par 78 to finish with a 248 score (87-83-78) in 95th place. Junior Sammie Buchanan was the Spartans’ top finisher in 54th place with a 232 score (75-76-81). Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir finished in a tie for 74th place overall with a 238 score after opening with an 81 and 78 before carding a 79 in the third and final round.
