Furman?s DeVita Named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman midfielder Stephanie DeVita has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Oct. 20-26. The selection is made by the league office and is the final one of the 2014 season.

DeVita, who also earned the honor on Sept. 30, helped the Paladins to a pair of wins last week to close the regular season, scoring five goals and adding an assist for 11 points.

In a 4-1 win over UNCG on Friday, the Simpsonville, S.C., native scored twice and assisted on another score. After assisting on Furman’s first goal, DeVita scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 39th minute. She would add another goal in the 67th minute.

The junior was even better against VMI on Sunday, notching a hat trick on goals in the 20th, 21st and 62nd minutes in the 5-1 win. DeVita again had the game-winner, moving her career total to 21 decisive goals, the most in school history.

With 14 goals on the season, DeVita’s career total now stands at 48, good for fourth in SoCon history. She has 113 career points, which is fifth in league history.

DeVita’s play also earned her a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.

Furman (12-3-2, 6-1-2 SoCon), which has won five straight, earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. The Paladins will host a quarterfinal match on Sunday at 2 p.m. and will take on either No. 7 seed Wofford (6-10-0, 3-6-0) or No. 10 seed Chattanooga (1-16-1, 0-9-0), who face each other Wednesday in the first round.

Also nominated: Lea Raedle (The Citadel), Amanda Abbott (Samford) and Markie-Lynn Studnicky (Western Carolina).
