Furman third at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (+1) carded a 74 in Monday's second round to tie for ninth place individually as the Paladins moved into third place at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,972 yards Turtle Point Golf Course.
Totland teed off of No. 10 and birdied two holes on the back and one on the front to finish the round at 2-over, six strokes behind leader CC Buford (-5) of College of Charleston, who carded a 68 in Monday's second round.
Coastal Carolina (-4) remains in first place following two rounds of play. The Chanticleers hold a 12-stroke lead over No. 25 GRU Augusta (+8), while the 30th-ranked Paladins (+14) moved into third place. Thirty-ninth ranked Kansas (+15) is in fourth, followed by No. 42 Kansas State (+23) in fifth place.
Paladin junior Valentina Romero (+4) birdied two holes on the front to tie for 18th place heading into Tuesday's play, while freshman Reona Hirai (+5) is tied for 23rd following two rounds of play. Freshman Alice Chen (+6) is tied for 27th after birdieing No. 18 on Monday, and senior Laura DeMarco (+11) enters Tuesday's final round tied for 58th place after notching two birdies in the second round.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. The Paladins will tee off of holes Nos. 1, 2, and 3.
Chattanooga moves to sixth at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Emily McLennan navigated Turtle Point Golf Course in 67 strokes Monday. The 5-under round is one off current Ladies European Tour pro Christine Wolf’s school record. Her play keyed the Mocs’ 297 and move into sixth place with 18 holes to play.
McLennan had a career-high six birdies on her card. She was 2-under through 12 holes heading to the par-3 fourth. She birdied the next three holes and four of the next five to get to minus-6. A bogey on her final hole ended her round with 11 pars and the lone bogey to go with the six birdies. Her 67 was more than 10 shots better than the day’s average tally (77.26).
The round moved her 65 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 18 with teammate Isabella Loza at 4-over. Loza matched her first-round total of 74 as the junior continue to post solid rounds. She’s averaged 74.8 strokes per round over her last five scores.
Megan Woods and Agathe Sauzon completed the team score of 297, shooting 77 and 79, respectively. Woods birdied No. 7 (her 16th hole) to get back to 3-over before a double bogey on eight. Cris Perez had the drop score with an 81.
Coastal Carolina doubled its lead to 12 shots at 4-under (572). The Chanticleers shot 290 Monday and lead No. 25 GRU Augusta at 584. Furman is third with a 590. College of Charleston individual C.C. Buford is the leader at 5-under (139). CCU’s Malene Krolboll Hansen and Lena Schaeffner are tied for second two shots back at 141.
Chattanooga’s 297 tied for the third-best team score of the day behind CCU (290) and the 25th-ranked Jaguars’ 296. The Mocs are two behind fifth-place Kansas State and nine shy of Kansas in fourth.
The final round tees off Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Mocs are joined on the tee by the Jayhawks and Wildcats. The trio opens on holes three through six.
ETSU is 10th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Linda Dobele carded a team-best round of even-par 72 and the ETSU women’s golf team improved on its first-round score by six strokes to move up three spots on the team leaderboard during second-round play Monday in the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Course.
While Dobele’s efforts helped her move into a tie for 32nd on the individual leaderboard, ETSU true freshman Allyson Dunn continues to pace the Buccaneers by finishing tied for 27th after rounds of 76 and 74 during the first two days of play.
As a team, the Bucs are tied for 10th after having posted rounds of 305 and 299.
Coastal Carolina currently leads the event by 12 strokes over 25th-ranked GRU Augusta, as the Chanticleers have posted an impressive team score of 4-under-par 572 to this point. Individually, College of Charleston’s CC Buford finished the day at 5-under-par 139 to take the top spot, while the Coastal Carolina duo of Malene Krolboll Hansen and Lena Schaeffner are two strokes back at 3-under for the event.
Along with Dobele, junior Vivienne Chin is also tied for 32nd after a round of 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday. Other ETSU results include a tie for 52nd by freshman Dominika Czudkova and a tie for 64th by sophomore Rachel Pollock.
Western Carolina 17th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Western Carolina women’s golf team improved its team score by six strokes on Monday by carding a second-round 308, remaining in possession of 17th place overall while moving to within three strokes of its next two competitors. Redshirt junior Kristin Swindell and sophomore Olivia Landino led the way for the Catamounts, both shooting 4-over-par 76 in the second round.
Paired with golfers from Georgia State and James Madison, WCU’s scoring five will hit the course at 8:45 a.m. between holes No. 14-16 with a final-round shotgun start. Bethany Galloway, WCU’s individual, starts on hole No. 18.
Swindell advanced three positions into a seven-way tie for 39th-place overall (152), carding two birdies against four bogeys and a double-bogey over her second 18 holes to lead the Catamounts. The Bradenton, Fla., native was even-par through five holes before a double-bogey on the par-4 sixth left her at 2-over at the turn. Swindell promptly birdied the first hole of her back nine on the par-5 10th, charting three bogeys and five pars the rest of the way for the 4-over round.
All told, Swindell leads the team with 24 par over the first two days of competition, including a run of eight straight at the close of the first round and the first hole of Monday’s second.
Landino’s second round jumped her up 10 spots in the standings, as she enters the final round in a three-way tie for 86th overall (160). On Monday, the Hermitage, Pa., product shot 5-over on the front nine with five bogeys against four pars but rallied to shoot 1-under on the back nine with three birdies on her first five holes after the turn.
Junior Kim Mitchell is the second-highest standing Catamount after two rounds, shooting 78 and 79 (157) to sit tied for 71st overall. Mitchell, who is just one of two golfers in the field with an eagle through 36 holes, finished with 13 pars against three bogeys and two double-bogeys on Monday.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are sophomore Ashley Thompson, up 10 spots into a tie for 79th overall at 159, and junior Mariah Hopkins, who slipped into a tie for 92nd overall at 163, including a second-round score of 85. Thompson was 1-under-par through five holes on Monday before making the turn at 2-over then carding her second birdie of the tournament on No. 10.
Playing unattached as an individual, Galloway slipped eight spots in the standings into 91st overall after back-to-back rounds of 81 (162).
UNCG 19th at Palmetto Intercollegiate
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team continued to hold on to 19th place after the second round of the annual Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Kiawah Island Resort hosted by the College of Charleston. The Spartans will tee off from holes No. 17 and 18 at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in the shotgun start for round three.
The Spartans are in 19th place overall after posting scores of 326 and 320 in the first two rounds for a combined score of 646. Coastal Carolina holds the overall lead with a 572 (282-290), while GRU Augusta is in second with a 584 (288-296).
CC Buford of College of Charleston holds the individual lead with a 5-under-par 139 (71-68) playing as an individual, while Malene Kroboll Hansen and Lena Shaeffner of Coastal Carolina are tied for 3-under par 141.
Junior Sammie Buchanan leads the Spartans after the first round in a tie for 32nd place. Buchanan opened with a 3-over-par 75 in round one before carding a 4-over-par 76 Monday. Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir is the second Spartans’ scorer at 159 (81-78), while junior transfer Jessica Madsen posted back-to-back rounds of 83 for a 166 score.
