Alexander Named National Player of the Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman women’s soccer standout Jamie Alexander has been named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Disney National Player of the Week following her record-setting performance this past weekend, it was announced on Tuesday.

Alexander, a native Martinez, Ga., opened the weekend by assisting on Carlie Couch’s game-winning score in the 81st minute as Furman downed Southern Conference rival Samford, 1-0, on Friday night at Stone Stadium.

In the Paladins’ regular-season home finale on Sunday, Alexander came off of the bench to net four goals in a span of 5:38 in the first half to key Furman to a 9-0 victory over Chattanooga. The junior’s four goals in 5:38 shattered the NCAA record for fastest four consecutive goals by the same player, which was previously set by Mt. St. Mary’s Karyn Farrar (6:26) in 2005.

With Furman leading the Mocs 2-0, Alexander opened her account with a header inside the right post on a cross from Stephanie DeVita at the 29:20 mark. At 32:27, DeVita fired a shot from close range that was saved before rebounding into the path of Alexander, who poked her second goal of the afternoon past the Chattanooga goalkeeper from inside 6 yards. Just 46 second later, Alexander unleashed a 28-yard strike to up the Paladin lead to 5-0. She capped the run at 34:58 by volleying a shot into the right side of the net off of a cross on a set piece that was deflected into her path on the right side of the box.

The Paladins netted seven first-half goals in a span of less than 13 minutes en route to the 9-0 triumph. Alexander’s four-goal outing also matched Furman’s single-game goals record that had previously been established by Melissa Sutton, Danielle Petro and Alexa Jones.

Alexander finished the weekend with four goals and an assist for nine total points. She was named SoCon Player of the Week and selected to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week earlier on Tuesday.

Furman (10-3-2, 4-1-2 SoCon) concludes regular-season play this weekend when it faces UNCG in Greensboro, N.C., on Friday at 7 p.m. before visiting SoCon newcomer VMI on Sunday in Lexington, Va.
