Furman finishes ninth at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (+8) finished 10th after scoring a 75 Sunday in the final round of play at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the par-71, 5,870-yard Cherokee Country Club.
Totland, who is ranked 14th nationally, birdied three holes on the day to finish the round at 4-over, nine strokes behind third-ranked Nanna Madsen (-1) of South Carolina, who shot an even-par on Sunday to win individual medalist honors by three strokes.
Paladin freshman Reona Hirai (+17) birdied No. 4 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 51st, while senior Laura DeMarco (+19) tied for 57th. Rookie Alice Chen (+20) tied for 60th, and junior Valentina Romero (+22) notched four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 15 & No. 16, to card a 75 on Sunday and tie for 68th.
Second-ranked South Carolina (+13) scored a final-round 281 to win the tournament, finishing 14 strokes ahead of 13th-ranked Tennessee (+27). No. 33 Ken State (+28) took third place, followed by No. 40 Louisville (+32), and 21st-ranked UCF (+35). The 11th-ranked Paladins (+54) finished ninth.
Furman will conclude the 2014 fall season Oct. 26-28 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Chattanooga finishes 13th at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished 13th against a strong field at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate at Cherokee Country Club. The Mocs shot 923 to end up four behind College of Charleston in 12th and one shot in front of Penn State in 14th.
Senior Agathe Sauzon tied for 15th to lead the squad. She shot 222 with rounds of 76, 72 and 74. It is her second top-15 in a row.
Isabella Loza tied for 32nd, four behind Sauzon at 226. She carded scores of 76, 72 and 78, which gave the team a needed lift.
Freshman Megan Woods had a tough opening round with an 85, but bounced back to shoot 77 and 76.
Emily McLennan (237) finished one stroke ahead of Woods (238). Sarah Dolmovich ended up at 256.
No. 2 South Carolina won the event shooting 865. That was 14 better than host No. 13 Tennessee (879) in second, which topped Kent State in third by one at 880. The Gamecocks had three ladies finish in the top four, including medalist Nanna Madsen. Madsen won with a 1-under total of 212.
Chattanooga completes its fall campaign at the end of the month. The squad travels to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Oct. 26-28. The three-day, 54-hole event is played at Turtle Point.
ETSU finishes 15th at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The ETSU women’s golf team once again improved on its previous two rounds of the weekend but was unable to make a move up the leaderboard Sunday during third and final round play at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the Cherokee Country Club.
Facing a talented field that included No. 2-ranked South Carolina and eight teams ranked in the nation’s top 40, the Buccaneers ultimately finished the event in 15th place. On the bright side, the Bucs posted four scores in the 70s for the second straight day and got a team-best round of 3-over-par 74 from sophomore Linda Dobele.
While Dobele posted the team’s best round of the day, junior Vivienne Chin finished the event as the top ETSU performer, carding a 5-over 76 on Sunday and tying for 51st. Freshman Dominika Czudkova and sophomore Rachel Pollock both posted scores of 76 on Sunday and finished tied for 54th and 68th, respectively.
As for the tournament itself, No. 2 South Carolina took the team title by 14 strokes over host and No. 13-ranked Tennessee. The Gamecocks finished at 13-over 865 and made it a sweep thanks to No. 3-ranked Nanna Madsen’s two-stroke win over Tennessee’s Hannah Pietila.
The Bucs will return to play in their final tournament of the fall on Sunday, Oct. 26, in the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
