Furman ninth at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (+4) is in 10th place after carding a 76 Saturday in the second round of play at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the par-71, 5,870-yard Cherokee Country Club.
Totland, who is ranked 14th nationally, birdied three holes on the day to finish the round at 4-over, five strokes behind third-ranked Nanna Madsen (-1) of South Carolina, who is 1-under after firing a 69 on Saturday.
Paladin freshman Alice Chen (+9) is tied for 35th after birdieing No. 14 to score a 78 on Saturday, while senior Laura DeMarco (+10) led Furman with a 74 in second-round play. DeMarco, who is tied for 41st entering Sunday's round, birdied No. 7 to finish the front 1-over then notched a second birdie on No. 13. Freshman Reona Hirai (+11) and Junior Valentina Romero (+18) each carded a 75 on Saturday. Hirai birdied two holes on the front to finish the round tied for 50th, while Romero recorded one birdie on the front and one on the back to enter Sunday's final round tied for 77th.
No. 40 Louisville (+12) carded a 287 on Saturday to move into first place, three strokes ahead of No. 33 Kent State (+15). Second-ranked South Carolina (+16) is in third place entering Sunday's final round. The 11th-ranked Paladins (+31) are in ninth place following two rounds of play.
Furman will tee off of No. 1 Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the tournament's final round.
Chattanooga 13th at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team improved by 19 strokes on day two of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate at Cherokee Country Club. Saturday’s 298 gives the squad a 615 total, which is five behind Michigan in 12th at 610. The Mocs bested playing partners Penn State and ETSU by three and eight shots, respectively.
Agathe Sauzon and Isabella Loza shot team-best 72s, 1-over-par scores on the par-71 tract. Their 6-over total (148) is tied for 17th heading into Sunday’s final round. Emily McLennan and Megan Woods also had matching scores with 77s. Sarah Dolmovich had the drop tally with an 82.
Louisville (580) flipped a four-shot opening-18 deficit into a three-shot lead. The Cardinals shot 287 to pass first-round leader Kent State (583). No. 2 South Carolina is in third at 584. The Gamecocks’ Nanna Madsen is in first individually at 1-under (141). Alina Rogers is in second at even-par (142), while Hannah Pietila (Tennessee) is in third at 1-over (143).
The final round Sunday starts at 9:25 a.m. Eastern time for the Mocs. Dolmovich leads off No. 10, followed by Woods (9:35), McLennan (9:45), Loza (9:55) and Sauzon (10:05).
ETSU 15th at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Besting its first-round score by 11 strokes, the ETSU women’s golf team continued to face down a talented field Saturday in second-round play at the Merdeces-Benz Intercollegiate at the Cherokee Country Club. The Bucs sit 15th as a team.
Freshman Allyson Dunn was a particularly encouraging bright spot on Saturday, bouncing back and improving on her first-round score by 10 strokes to card a team-best 3-over-par 74 in the second round. Along with Dunn, every other ETSU player either improved or matched her score from Friday.
Junior Vivienne Chin remains the top individual performer for the Buccaneers, tying for 54th after a 77 in the second round. Meanwhile, teammate Dominika Czudkova also posted a 77 on the day and finished tied for 60th.
Louisville currently stands at 12-over-par 580 and leads the team competition by three strokes over Kent State. Individually, Nanna Madsen tops the field after posting rounds of 72 and 69 to currently stand at 1-under-par 141, one stroke better than Missouri’s Alina Rogers.
The Bucs will wrap up third-round play Sunday.
