Football Weekly Awards Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for all games played Oct. 11. The Citadel’s Aaron Miller was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while his teammate Cam Jackson garnered Freshman of the Week honors. Western Carolina also had a pair recognized, as Christon Gill was tabbed the Defensive Players of the Week and Detrez Newsome was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Aaron Miller, The Citadel, Sr., QB, Clover, S.C.
Aaron Miller turned in a strong all-around performance for The Citadel as the Bulldogs topped Charlotte, 63-56, in double overtime Saturday. On the ground, Miller carried 22 times for 197 yards and a touchdown. The senior ripped off a 50-yard run, the longest rush from scrimmage this season for the Bulldogs. Through the air, Miller completed 13 of 22 passes for 136 yards and two scores, including a 17-yard TD pass to Brandon Eakins in the second overtime.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Christon Gill, Western Carolina, Sr., LB, Bridgeport, Conn.
Linebacker Christon Gill recorded a team-high 12 tackles in Western Carolina’s 26-14 over Wofford on Saturday. Gill was credited with four solo stops and eight assists. The senior recorded two tackles for loss, which resulted in minus-4 yards. Gill anchored the WCU defense, which held Wofford to season lows in points (14) and rushing yards (270).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Cam Jackson, The Citadel, Fr., RB, Mobile, Ala.
Freshman Cam Jackson was responsible for 243 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in The Citadel’s win. Jackson, a converted quarterback, rushed 12 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The Mobile, Ala., native caught four passes for 49 yards and added four kickoff returns for 76 yards. Jackson scored on a 10-yard run early in the first quarter and added a 9-yard score later in the quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Detrez Newsome, Western Carolina, Fr., RB/KR, Raeford, N.C.
Detrez Newsome opened the game with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Wofford. Newsome averaged 46.7 yards per return Saturday as he finished with three returns for 140 yards. His touchdown was the first kickoff returned for a score by the Catamounts since 2011. He later added a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and ranks third in the Southern Conference with 8.0 points per game.
