SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Jamaal Brantley and Western Carolina’s David Johnson have been named the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Brantley, a senior from Summerville, S.C., won the 60-meter dash at the Wesley Brown Invitational and set a new personal-best time of 6.85. His time was .01 off from tying the Citadel school record. He also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.33.
Johnson, a sophomore from Charlottesville, Va., took the title in the triple jump at the UNC Dick Taylor Challenge, posting a jump of 48’11 ¾.
Furman’s Grace Tinkey and Western Carolina’s Michaela Birek were selected as the Southern Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Tinkey, a freshman from Macon, Ga., broke the Emory Invitational record in the 5,000-meter run by more than 40 seconds, taking the top spot in 17:02.99. Her time currently leads the conference by 20 seconds and is the top time among freshmen on the national list.
Birek, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., scored 3,515 points to finish fourth in the pentathlon at the UNC Dick Taylor Challenge. Birek set a new Western Carolina record with her score, also posting the second-best mark in the SoCon this year.
