GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team opened the 2014 season defeating North Carolina A&T, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Simkins Indoor Tennis Center.
The Terriers improve to 1-0 on the season with the win and the Aggies fall to 0-1 with the loss.
Wofford earned the first point in doubles as No. 1 senior duo of Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans defeated Jayla Scott and Kenya Colbert, 6-0, and No. 2 doubles freshman pair Kali Karas and Catherine Martin defeated Kimberly Stalling and Saundra Smith, 6-1.
In singles play, all of the top four tennis players won their respective matches with the final two matches being won by forfeit. In the top match, Evans defeated Colbert in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 player junior Audrey Coventry defeated Scott, 6-1, 6-3.
In addition, Paulson defeated Stalling in straight sets at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-3 and Martin defeated Smith in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 position.
The women’s tennis team returns to action on Friday, January 31, when they host USC Upstate in the Terriers’ season opener at the John E. Reeves Tennis Courts. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
Georgia 4, Elon 0
ATHENS, Ga. – The Elon University women’s tennis team dropped its opening round match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament Friday, Jan. 24, against the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 4-0 at the Lindsay Hopkins Indoor Courts.
The Bulldogs took the doubles point by handling the Phoenix on each of the three courts. The pairing of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia swept Taylor Casey and Maria Camara Ruiz 6-0 on court No. 2. They were followed quickly by Caroline Brinson and Lilly Kimbell at No. 3 doubles, as the duo dispatched Bryn Khoury and Viviana Stavreva, 6-1.
Khoury held strong on singles court No. 4 against Fuller, the 33rd-ranked player in the country, as the match turned to singles, but the Bulldogs took control early on each of the remaining courts.
Silvia Garcia, ranked No. 10 in the country, was first off the court with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Frida Jansaker on court No. 2. She was followed shortly after by Maho Kowase, as the 25th-ranked player in the nation worked quickly in beating Barbora Lazarova 6-0, 6-1 on court No. 3.
Lauren Herring, ranked No. 4 in the country, put the Bulldogs in the championship match of the tournament with her win on court No. 1. Herring topped Jordan Johnston 6-0, 6-0.
Khoury’s match went unfinished, but the senior only dropped the first set 6-4 after Fuller picked up a break of Khoury late to clinch the set.
