No. 3 North Carolina 4, Elon 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at No. 3 North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The third-ranked Tar Heels flexed their muscles from the start, with the duo of Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter, ranked No. 12 in the country, breezing past Taylor Casey and Maria Camara Ruiz at No. 2 doubles, 6-2.
North Carolina continued its roll when Caroline Price and Whitney Kay, ranked No. 10 in the country, dominating Elon’s top-ranked doubles pairing of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker, 6-1, to earn the doubles point.
The Phoenix continued to struggle as the match turned to the singles phase. With four of North Carolina’s six singles players nationally ranked, the Tar Heels picked up three matches to earn the victory.
Bryn Khoury was first off the court after getting beaten by Ashley Dai, who is ranked No. 118 in the nation. Dai had her way with Khoury, topping the senior 6-0, 6-1.
Tessa Lyons made quick work of Camara Ruiz and quickly finished with a final of 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 6. Jamie Loeb, the second-ranked player in the nation, polished off the win for the Tar Heels by beating Johnston on court No. 1. Loeb breezed past Johnston in the first set with a 6-0 win, but Johnston fought in the second set until ultimately falling 6-3.
Barbora Lazarova hung strong with Kay, the No. 88 player in the country, on court No. 3, having only dropped the first set 6-4. Lazarova only trailed 3-2 in the second set before North Carolina finished off the match.
The Phoenix returns to the courts Friday in Athens, Ga. when it takes on No. 4 Georgia in the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
No. 3 North Carolina 4, UNCG 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team faced off against another ACC opponent Wednesday evening, falling 4-0 to No. 3 North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Spartans were handed their second loss of the season, while the Tar Heels are 2-0.
UNC took the doubles point to go up 1-0. At No. 3 doubles, UNCG’s Amy Ellis and Stephanie Falcon fell 6-0 to Tessa Lyons and Laura Slater. Yasmin Franco and Jamie Grinberg fell 6-2 to Caroline Price and Hayley Carter at No. 1 doubles.
The two victories earned the Tar Heels the point, leaving Kayla Gammie and Devon Sutherland’s match against Jamie Loeb and Ashley Dai at 3-2.
Franco battled Carter, the fifth-ranked singles player in the country, at the No. 2 singles spot. Carter earned North Carolina its second point of the evening with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Grinberg played Lyons at the No. 4 singles matchup. Lyons earned UNC another point in two sets, 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 1 singles, Falcon took on Loeb, who is currently ranked second in the nation. Loeb won the point in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the victory.
Gammie and Price played at the No. 3 singles slot. Gammie took two of the games in set one but fell 6-2 and was down 3-0 in set two when the match was clinched.
Ellis took on Kate Vialle at the No. 5 singles position. Vialle held the lead at 6-1, 4-1 when Loeb earned the clinching point over Falcon.
Sutherland and Laura Slater played at the No. 6 singles spot. Sutherland won three games in the first set but Slater took the set 6-3. Slater was up 1-0 in set two when the match was over.
UNCG will take a break from match play until Feb. 8, when it welcomes in the East Carolina Pirates for a 2 p.m. start at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
