SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Brian Kowalski, a tennis player from Elon, has been named the North Carolina Education Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 22, the league office announced Wednesday.
Kowalski is a junior from Tampa, Fla., and holds a 3.48 GPA in exercise science. He was a member of the Southern Conference Honor Roll in 2012-13.
Kowalski clinched a third-set tiebreaker to earn a win (6-3, 2-6, 6-5 (7-3)) at the No. 4 singles position to give the Phoenix a 4-3 upset over No. 7 Duke on Friday. The victory over the Blue Devils was Elon’s second win over an ACC opponent in program history. At No. 7, Duke is the highest-ranked opponent that Elon has ever defeated.
Also nominated for NCEL Student-Athlete of the Week were The Citadel’s Joaquin Marquez and Western Carolina’s Hana Haden.
