CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team opened the 2014 spring dual season with a 7-0 sweep at Austin Peay this afternoon. The Mocs took all ten matches in the dual, improving to 10-2 all-time against the Governors.
UTC swept the doubles point and did not drop more than three games in any of the three matches. Senior Alexa Flynn and sophomore Kelsey Coots set the tone with their 6-2 win over Jovana Karac and Vanessa Tavares at No. 2. The women are playing doubles matches to six games on a preliminary basis in non-conference action.
Junior Kaylene Chadwell and sophomore Kayla Jones also scored a 6-2 win at No. 1 while junior Claire Mulyadi and sophomore Jovana Pecovski won 6-3 at No. 3.
Singles play was more of the same with UTC not dropping a set in any of the six matches. Flynn was first off the court with her (6-4, 6-0) win over Tavares at No. 3. Jones followed with a (6-2, 6-1) win at No. 1 and Chadwell closed the door with a (6-0, 6-1) win at No. 2.
Wake Forest 7, UNCG 2
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The UNCG women’s tennis team fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Monday afternoon, 7-2, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
UNCG lost all four doubles matches to start down 1-0.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Jamie Grinberg and freshman Yasmin Franco fell, 8-5, to Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang. Junior Kayla Gammie and senior Devon Sutherland fell 8-5 as well to Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernadez at the No. 2 doubles spot.
At the No. 3 spot, Stephanie Falcon and Amy Ellis fell to Andrea Retolaza and Kimmy Guerin, 8-1. In the final doubles match, Masey DeMoss and Asha Iyengar fell, 8-3, to Karen Forman and Brigita Bercyte.
Next, the two teams faced off in eight singles matches. DeMoss fell first to Forman, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 7 singles spot.
At No. 4 singles, Grinberg fell to Fernadez 6-0, 6-0.
Wrapping up third was the No. 6 singles pair, as Sutherland fell to Zhang 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 8 singles, Alisha Burton won two games in the first set but fell 6-2 in the first before a 6-0 defeat in the second to Kristina Centernari.
Falcon played number one singles but fell to Retolaza in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
At the No. 2 singles spot, Franco won three games in the first set, but went down 6-3 in the first and 6-0 in the second set to Guerin.
Gammie, playing at the third singles spot, earned UNCG’s first point of the match in a tie breaking third set. Gammie fell 6-1 in the first set but came back strong to take the second set 6-0. She won the tie-breaker 10-3.
A tie-breaker was forced at the No. 5 singles position as well after Amy Ellis defeated Kasey Gardiner in set one 6-3, but fell 6-3 in the second set. It required 12 points, but Ellis got the third set victory 12-10 to earn the Spartans a second point for the day.
UNCG falls to 0-1 on the season while Wake Forest improves to 2-0 after also earning a 6-1 win over College of Charleston Monday morning.
Furman at UCF Invite
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Furman women’s tennis swept the doubles competition for the second day in a row and registered three singles wins in the final day of play at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The Paladins squared off against Florida International in doubles and faced UCF in singles at the tournament.
Junior Alex Moreno-Kaste and senior Katherine Oudin combined for a 6-2 victory versus Tina Mohorcic and Nina Nagode, and rookies Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks teamed up to beat Aleksandra Trifunovic and Carlotta Orlando, 6-3. The doubles team of senior Margaret Boyette and freshman Karlee Bryde battled to a close 7-5 win over Giulietta Boha and Valentina Briceno.
In singles action, the three Furman rookies were victorious, as Speaks topped Courtney Griffith, 6-2, 6-3, and Martin held on for a 7-6, 7-6 win versus Cortney Cesarini. Bryde registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Annika Hepp.
The Paladins will open the 2014 dual season January 28 at South Carolina. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
