Campbell 26, Appalachian State 15
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell took its first win over Appalachian State since the 2000-01 season, 26-15 Friday in the teams’ Southern Conference opener. The Camels used two major decisions and two pins to earn their first dual meet win of the season.
Sophomore Taylor McGiffen put CU ahead early with an 11-2 major decision over Kacee Hutchinson, giving the Camels the four-point advantage. Redshirt Eloheim Palma earned his 18th win of the season at the heavyweight spot with a 7-4 decision over Denzel Dejournette, putting CU up 7-0 after two matches.
Appalachian State’s Dominic Parisi picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds and Camel freshman Drew Walker fell to William Johnson 5-2 as the Mountaineers took the 9-7 edge.
Sophomore Michael Dahlstrom regained the Camel lead with a commanding 16-5 major decision over Jake Smith at 141 pounds. The win was Dahlstrom’s team-leading fourth major decision of the season and gave CU the 11-9 advantage, and the Camels held the lead for the remainder of the match.
Brent Jorge pushed the Camels to a 17-9 lead after pinning Javon Johnson in 4:48. The pin was Jorge’s fourth of the year at 149 pounds and gave the redshirt senior his 18th victory this season.
Appalachian State threatened a comeback with two straight decisions to close the score to 17-15. Nick Hall earned the 3-1 win over sophomore Grant Blumenthal at 157 pounds, and Zachary Strickland took the 7-3 victory over junior Paul Duggan at 165.
Campbell finished the dual strong, taking the final two matches and securing the 26-15 win.
Sophomore Cody Ryba picked up his first fall of the season at 174 pounds, pinning Collin Hedash in 2:37. Freshman Ville Heino secured the Camel win with an 8-3 decision over Dominick Vetell at the 184-pound spot.
The win breaks a 13-year Mountaineer winning streak in the series. Last year, the Camels threatened to end the drought but fell 16-15 in Boone.
The Camels look to go 2-0 in SoCon action as they travel to VMI on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Appalachian State returns to action Monday at Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.

The Citadel splits at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. – The Citadel wrestling team split a pair of matches on Friday in the opening day of the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The Bulldogs fell to Kent State 28-12 in the opening round but bounced back to edge Bucknell 19-18 in their second match.
The Bulldogs are 2-1 in dual matches this season.
Aaron Walker's riding-time point gave the 157-pounder the one point he needed to complete the 12-4 major decision victory over Bucknell's Logan Kerin, which gave the Bulldogs a narrow 10-9 advantage halfway through the dual.
Seventeenth-ranked Turtogtokh Luvsandorj followed up Walker's performance with a convincing 10-5 win at 165 to give the Bulldogs a 13-9 advantage. After falling 3-0 in the opening bout against Kent State's Cory Campbell at 174, freshman Terrell Forbes bounced back to top Bison grappler Rory Bonner by the same score and give his team a 16-9 lead heading into the final three bouts.
A stumble at 184 by Kenneth Radford cut the Bulldog lead to 16-12, but a 5-2 win by 197-pounder Marshall Haas put the match out of reach heading into the heavyweight bout.
In the opening match, Kent State collected 18 points off of pins at 141, 197 and 285 to secure the win over The Citadel.
Despite taking the early 3-0 lead off a Joaquin Marquez win at 125, The Citadel dropped its next two matches and faced a 9-3 deficit heading into the 149-pound bout.
The heart of the Bulldog lineup cruised to three consecutive decision victories by Matt Frisch (6-4), Walker (3-2) and Luvsandorj (6-5) to regain the lead, 12-9.
The Golden Flashes took the final four bouts by the way of two falls, a major decision and a decision to complete the win and advance in the winner's bracket.
The Bulldogs' next dual is slated for 10 a.m. Saturday against sixth-seeded Rider. The Broncs topped George Mason 25-16 in its first match of the day before falling to Virginia Tech 25-9.

Chattanooga splits at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split two matches at the Virginia Duals on Friday. The Mocs opened with a 35-7 win over Arizona State before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 13 Virginia 18-13.
UTC scored eight wins in 10 matches against the Sun Devils. Junior Shawn Greevy (149) highlighted the match with UTC’s fastest pin of the season. He put ASU’s Preston McCalmon on his back just 29 seconds into the match to improve to 11-6 on the year.
Chattanooga scored bonus points in six of its eight wins. Junior Corey Mock improved to 19-0 at 165 with his pin at the end of the second period against James Brundage.
Chattanooga ran into top-seeded Virginia in the second round and gave the Cavaliers all they could handle. UTC scored four wins in the dual, including two over ranked opponents. Junior Levi Clemons had one of the best wins of his career with a 10-5 decision against No. 10 Stephen Doty.
Freshman heavyweight Dawson Peck, who joined the Mocs after transferring from Virginia Tech this week, won his second match of the day with an 11-6 decision over No. 20 Ethan Hayes. Greevy also scored his second win with a 6-0 decision over Chris Yankowich at 149.
Junior Nick Soto continued his solid season with two wins Friday, including a 10-2 major decision against Joe Martinez at 133. He leads the Mocs with a 23-6 overall record. Mock dropped his first match of the year, a 10-6 decision to No. 3 Nicholas Sulzer.
Chattanooga was only down 13-10 following Clemons’ win at 174. However, two straight decisions at 184 and 197 gave the Cavs the win. Virginia was docked one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the heavyweight match to end the match 18-13.
UTC will take on Lock Haven in the backdraw Saturday. The match starts at 10 a.m.
