Chattanooga 2, UNC Asheville 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium despite a lopsided shooting effort.
The Mocs improved to 2-2 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-3.
UNC Asheville’s Shenny Lehhart charged from the left side toward the Chattanooga goal and fed Kennedy Garrett in the box for the first score of the game at the 8:55 mark of the opening period.
Chattanooga answered that late in the first half off a corner kick. Sophomore Hannah Wyatt lofted her shot to the front of the goal and it was picked up by freshman Hailey Callis, who headed in the first goal of her collegiate career in the 36th minute.
The score remained tied through halftime at 1-1 and it would be nearly 15 minutes into the second half before the Mocs would break the tie with what proved to be the game winner.
Junior Crystal Mackezyk picked up the ball just past midfield and dodged defenders as she looked to make the pass. When no opportunity was presented, she took the shot at the 18-yard box, but it was deflected off the feet of the UNCA defenders. However, Mackezyk picked up the deflection and, with the keeper away from the net, she chipped the shot over her head and into the right side of the net.
The Bulldogs outshot UTC 16-9, with Lehhart and Garrett each taking three. UNCA had nine shots on goal to Chattanooga’s three.
The Mocs used both keepers Sunday. Sophomore Lauren Thomas logged the first 45 minutes and made five saves with one goal against. Senior Taylor Mangrum played the second half with three saves and no goals for the win.
The Mocs will hit the road for a three-game road stretch, including a trip to Gardner-Webb for the Under Armour Border Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C. UTC will play the host Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. and USC Upstate on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Wofford 2, Gardner-Webb 1
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior defender Maggie Bosley scored the game-winning goal and her first of the season in the 62nd minute as the Wofford women's soccer team beat the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers came back from a one-goal deficit, scoring two goals in the second half to earn their second straight win of the season. With the win, Wofford improved to 2-2-1 on the season, while Gardner-Webb fell to 1-3-1 overall.
In the first half, Gardner-Webb would take the lead 1-0 in the 33rd minute when forward Shelby Hoo scored her third goal of the season off a pass from forward Tara Woelfel.
The Terriers would create the most pressure in the half, outshooting the Runnin’ Bulldogs 14-3.
In the second half, all of the pressure would pay off early as junior midfielder Maureen Buff scored for Wofford in the 57th minute to tie it at 1-1. The goal was unassisted as Buff struck a ball into the lower left side of the net.
Five minutes later, Bosley would score the game-winning goal, putting the Terriers up for good, 2-1. Freshman forward Faith Lifer found Bosley to earn her first career assist.
For the match, the Wofford outshot Gardner-Webb 27-4 and won the corner battle 6-1.
Senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn earned her second win of the season as she faced four Gardner-Webb shots and made one save. For the Runnin’ Bulldogs, junior goalkeeper Amy Schmitt fell to 1-3-1 on the season, facing 27 Terrier shots and made nine saves.
The Terriers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 20, when they travel Clinton, S.C., to take on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. The team’s next home match is on Friday, Sept. 27, when they host Francis Marion University at Snyder Field at 7 p.m.
Samford 2, UTSA 0
SAN ANTONIO – The Samford University soccer team posted a dominant 2-0 shutout victory against the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday in a key nonconference contest held at the Park West Athletics Complex. The win proved to be the Bulldogs’ third shutout of the young 2013 campaign, as well as their first road triumph.
Samford (3-2) received goals from junior forward Amanda Abbott and sophomore defender Hallie Georgi in Sunday’s victory.
Abbott’s game-winning score came in the 18th minute and was assisted by both Anna Allen and Michelle Moll. Georgi’s unassisted second-half goal occurred in the 52nd minute and proved to be the first of her collegiate career.
The Bulldogs’ true freshman goalkeeper Katie Peters registered a pair of critical saves Sunday and tallied the third shutout of her rookie campaign. Peters, a native of Greenfield, Ind., owns a stellar 0.80 goals-against-average this season.
With Sunday’s loss, UTSA (1-5) dropped its third straight decision and fell to 1-2 when playing at home in 2013. Since earning a shutout victory against Sam Houston State on Aug. 30, the Roadrunners have dropped consecutive outings to Lamar, 3-1, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2-1, and Samford, 2-0.
UTSA was paced offensively by Laylla Da Cruz, who rattled off a team-high three shot attempts, but the Roadrunners were outnumbered in corner kicks by the Bulldogs, 9-3.
Samford outshot UTSA, 12-10, and also finished with six shots on goal, as compared to just two by the Roadrunners. The Bulldogs’ shutout triumph Sunday occurred in the first all-time meeting between the teams.
Samford will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for a highly anticipated home matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
The Citadel 2, Charleston Southern 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team remained undefeated in three home games this season following a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Charleston Southern on Sunday at WLI Field.
The Bulldogs evened their record at 2-2-1 and knocked off the Buccaneers for the third time in the past four years, trimming CSU's lead in the all-time series to 5-3-1. CSU saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.
Last weekend, the Bulldogs defeated Jacksonville State and played to a tie against Canisius at WLI Field. The three-game unbeaten streak is the longest for The Citadel since winning four straight games late in the 2010 season.
The Citadel earned the victory with 11:34 remaining in the game, when Mariana Garcia finished a play that was started by passes from Andrea Davila and Montana Hinson to score her fifth goal of the season. Garcia is the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week after scoring four goals in the two games last week.
The Bulldogs scored the opening goal of the game for the first time this season when Ruth Leiva knocked in a pass from Jillian Meyer with 14:13 remaining in the first half. The goal was the first of the season for someone other than Garcia and sixth of Leiva's career, while the assist was Meyer's third of the season.
CSU tied it up with 14 minutes expired in the second half on a goal by Chelsea Frankeny. But the Bulldog defense, led by goalkeeper Naomi Carter, kept the Buccaneers off the board the rest of the way. Carter recorded eight saves in the game and has a goals-against-average of 0.93 over the past three games.
The Citadel finished with a 21-18 advantage in shots, but CSU goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin kept her team in the game with 12 saves, including eight in the second half, when the Bulldogs outshot the Buccaneers 14-9. CSU took four corner kicks to three for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel is back in action on Friday with a road game at Presbyterian at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs return to WLI Field on Sept. 18 against Winthrop in the final game before the start of Southern Conference play at Furman on Sept. 27.
Elon 5, High Point 0
ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 5-0 rout of local rival High Point on Sunday night at Rudd Field. Elon remained unbeaten at 3-0-1 with the victory, while High Point dropped to 0-4 with the setback.
Jennifer McGorty headed in a Nicole Dennion cross in the second minute of the match to give the Phoenix early momentum. In the 14th minute, McGorty knocked in her second goal off a great cross from Olivia Mackey to give Elon a 2-0 edge.
Elon took a 3-0 lead at intermission following an Alissa Pantuosco goal off a Raychel Diver corner.
Dennion scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Phoenix up 4-0 in the 57th minute after taking a High Point defender 1-on-1 for a goal from 10 yards out.
Catherine Brinkman gave Elon a 5-0 lead in the 69th minute following her strike off a Pantuosco through ball up the middle of the field.
Kate Murphy played 75 minutes between the posts to help the Phoenix earn its third shutout of the season.
Elon returns to action on Friday at 5 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C., versus Longwood as part of a weekend tournament at UNCW.
Clemson 2, Davidson 0
CLEMSON, S.C. – Junior goalkeeper Rachel Locke tied her career-best with 10 saves, but Davidson’s offense was held without a shot in falling 2-0 on the road to Clemson Sunday afternoon at Historic Riggs Field in women’s soccer.
A year ago the Wildcats (0-3-3) tied the Tigers 1-1 at Alumni Stadium for their first point in the all-time series, but they were unable to match the result. Clemson, which moved to 2-1-2, scored a goal apiece in each half for the win.
Catrina Atanda scored both goals for the Tigers, hitting one form 20 yards out to the top right corner. Abby Jones was credited with assists on both scores.
Look faced 32 shots, see 13 of them go on goal and came up with 10 saves. It the junior’s second 10-save game this year and pushed her season total 35.
Davidson stays on the road, playing its fourth game in the last five away from home by heading down to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.
Georgia 1, UNCG 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team dropped its home opener to SEC foe Georgia, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
UNCG falls to 4-2 on the season while Georgia wins its fifth-straight game improving to 5-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs found the game-winning goal in the 58th minute when Madeline Barker collected a ball inside the box and buried a shot to the lower left corner just beating the keeper. It was Barker's third goal in six games for Georgia.
The Spartans had a couple of chances for the equalizer but couldn't quite find the back of the net. Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) finished with a game high three shots, while freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) had a shot attempt on goal but Georgia's keeper Caitlin Woody made the stop.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) finished with eight saves, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes of play. Simmons has 35 saves in six games this season.
In the first half, the Spartans stood toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs ending the period tied at 0-0. White had a couple of opportunities in the half finishing with two shots and one that was on goal but Georgia goalkeeper Caitlin Woody made the save.
Simmons made a couple of big saves including a sprawling save in the 27th minute denying Laura Eddy's chance of scoring. Also Georgia's Summer Burnett almost scored but senior Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) was able to knock it away for the team save.
UNCG remains home when they host Big South member Liberty Thursday, Sept. 12 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Charlotte 1, Western Carolina 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In a hotly contested and physical matchup, Charlotte (4-1) came out on top defeating Western Carolina women’s soccer (3-2) 1-0 Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
After a scoreless first half, it became apparent the team who could eke out a goal would have the upper hand. It was the 49ers who struck, picking up the momentum, when they found the back of the net early in the second half.
After a pair of shots apiece by Western Carolina and Charlotte to start the second half, it was the 49ers that found the opening. Jessica Ryan took a shot from 10 yards out, past four veteran Catamount defenders, to send the ball sailing to the right side of the net for the score at the 57:15 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Carly Tinstman had just come in goal for Western Carolina, replacing junior Jenny Lauer, who played the first half. Tinstman took the loss in goal and fell to 0-2 on the season. Lauer had four saves in 45 minutes of play, while Tinstman had three saves and allowed the one goal.
Western Carolina outshot Charlotte 13-10 and the last shot of the game for the Catamounts looked like it might send the match into overtime. With less than a minute left to play, the Catamounts got a corner kick to set up a scoring opportunity.
Redshirt junior Brittany Gendron took the corner kick and placed it perfectly in the box. Awaiting the pass was redshirt sophomore Kimberly Sullivan, who headed the ball toward the goal. In the scrum, Charlotte edged the ball away from the net just as it looked like it was going in.
Prior to Charlotte’s second-half score, Sullivan had a solid look at the goal when she sent it toward the net, but senior 49er goalkeeper Alex Kubrick was there to pick up the save. All told, Kubrick had seven saves in the match and improved to 4-1 on the season.
Western Carolina continues its three-match home stand by hosting Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. Friday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
