Chattanooga leads Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team is in the lead with 18 holes to play at the Starmount Fall Classic. The squad shot identical rounds of 289 (+5) for a school-record 36-hole total of 578 Monday.

The Mocs lead Campbell (588) by 10 and Maryland (590) by 12. They did so behind the spectacular combined performance of Agathe Sauzon, Jordan Britt and Emily McLennan. Each ranks in the top five with two shots separating the trio.

Sauzon is one shot off the lead at minus-1. She shot 70 in the morning and followed with a 71 in the afternoon. High Point’s Sarah Bae is the leader at 2-under. Sauzon is tied for second with Campbell’s Kaylin Yost.

Britt and McLennan are fourth and fifth, respectively. Britt matched Sauzon in the morning with her own 70, ending the day with a 72. Her 142 is a stroke clear of McLennan alone in fifth.

McLennan’s even-par 71 was two shots off the lead through 18 holes. She came back with a 72 for a 1-over par 143 as three shots divide first and fifth.

Isabella Loza and Porsche Campbell tied for the final counting score in round one at 78. Loza’s 74 on the second 18 aided the Mocs in taking the 10-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round.

Chattanooga returns to the tee at 9 a.m. Tuesday. It’s paired with Campbell and Maryland, beginning on holes 1-4 in the shotgun start.

Western Carolina seventh at Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore Kristen Swindell sits amidst a five-way tie for 12th place with a score of 5-over par 147 to lead Western Carolina to seventh place after 36 of the scheduled 54 holes Monday at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic being held at the par-71, 6,265-yard Starmount Forest Country Club.

The Catamounts are just five strokes outside of the top five entering the final 18 holes.

Paired with golfers from Wofford and Stetson, WCU gets the final round under way with a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Swindell posted rounds of 4-over par 75 and 1-over 72 for a 36-hole score of 147. Behind Swindell, sophomore Taylor Allison is tied for 22nd with freshman Olivia Landino in a tie for 33rd after two rounds. Allison shot 5-over par 76 to start the day before finishing with a 2-over par 73 for a two-round 149. Allison, who played back from 6-over par in the first round and did not go above 2-over on the second 18 holes, carded seven birdies on the day.

Landino posted identical rounds of 5-over par 76, countering 13 bogeys with three birdies.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are sophomore Mariah Hopkins in a tie for 44th at 154 with classmate Kim Mitchell in a tie for 66th overall at 160.

Playing unattached as individuals, freshmen Bethany Galloway (t-62nd) carded rounds of 79 and 80 for 159, with Ashley Thompson (t-69th) shooting 82 and 79. The two combined for three birdies on Monday.

Southern Conference foe Chattanooga carded consecutive rounds of 289 to hold a 10-stroke advantage over second-place Campbell, 578- 588. The Lady Mocs have three golfers inside the top five in building their tournament lead. Maryland sits in third, two strokes in arrears of Campbell at 590, with High Point (595) and James Madison (596) rounding out the top five.

High Point’s Sarah Bae carded consecutive rounds of 1-under par 70 for a two-round score of 140 to hold a stroke advantage over a two-way tie between Agathe Sauzon of Chattanooga and Campbell’s Kaylin Yost at 141.

Wofford eighth at Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College women’s golf team began play at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic on Monday and is in eighth place through 36 holes.

The Terriers started the tournament with a team score of 24-over 308 in the first round but bounced back with the fourth-best team score of the second round, carding an 11-over 295. The quality second round jumped Wofford from a tie for ninth into eighth place at 35-over and within 10 strokes of fourth-place High Point.

Senior Anne Marie Covar, junior Lauren Dunbar and freshman Katy Funk lead Wofford. All three Terriers are tied for 17th place with 36-hole scores of 6-over 148. Covar recovered from a 6-over round of 77 to shoot an even-par 71 in the afternoon session. Both Dunbar and Funk shot rounds of 4-over-par 75 followed by second-round of 2-over 73s.

Also competing for the Terriers are senior Alex Hendricks and sophomore Maegan Higgins. Hendricks is at 20-over, carding a pair of 10-over-par 81s, while Higgins is at 21-over with rounds of 85 and 78.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played from the par-71, 6,265-yard Starmount Country Club. All 15 teams and 84 individuals teed off the first round Monday morning in a shotgun format at 8:45 a.m. Round two began Monday afternoon following the completion of round one.

The final round is scheduled to tee off Tuesday in a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Elon tied for ninth at Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Through two rounds of the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, the Elon women's golf program sits in a tie for ninth thanks to rounds of 307 and 298 on Monday.

Leading the way for the Phoenix on day one was Sunna Vidisdottir. Vidisdottir fired a first-round 71, even par, before carding a 76 over her final 18 holes of the day. Her 147 has her tied for 12th out of the 84 golfers in the field. Vidisdottir notched six birdies, tied for the ninth-most in the tournament, over her first 36 holes of the tournament.

Kelsey Badmaev is three strokes back and tied for 25th (78-72=150). She had three birdies on the day. Badmaev's 25 pars are tied for the fifth-most in the tournament.

In a tie for 44th is Emily Brooks, who shot two rounds of 77 to finish at 154. She posted two birdies.

Kathryn Buckingham's 157 has her in a tie for 56th following two rounds of action. After posting an 84 over her first 18 holes, Buckingham rebounded with a 73 in round two. She was one of seven players to tally an eagle on the day as she carded a 2 on the par-4 16th hole in her second round. Buckingham also added four birdies.

Rounding out Elon's five-person contingent was Katie Partridge, who will begin Tuesday's final round in a tie for 62nd after she posted a two-round mark of 159 (81-78). She had four birdies.

Playing as an individual, Taylor Wilkerson posted four birdies on her way to a score of 154 (80-74) on the day. She is tied for 44th.

The individual lead is held by High Point's Sarah Bae after two rounds. Bae put up back-to-back rounds of 70 and holds a one-stroke lead over a pair of players.

Chattanooga leads the 15-team field thanks to two rounds of 289. The Lady Mocs' 578 is 10 strokes better than second-place Campbell's score.

Rounding out the top five are Maryland (590), High Point (595) and James Madison (596).

The Phoenix is tied with Stetson for ninth with a 605. Elon leads Richmond (614), host UNCG (615), Charleston Southern (618), Gardner-Webb (618) and North Florida (623).

The final round of the tournament will be held at the Starmount Country Club on Tuesday. Elon golfers are set to tee off at 9 a.m.

UNCG 12th at Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore women’s golfer Sammie Buchanan moved up 25 spots on the leaderboard during the first 36 holes of the 2013 UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic at the Starmount Forest Country Club on Monday. UNCG sits 12th after two rounds of play.

Buchanan carded a career-low 3-under-par 68 in round two to move from 33rd place after round one to a tie for eighth overall in round two.

Buchanan, who opened with a 6-over par 77 in the day’s first round, turned things around in round two, shooting the second-lowest score of the day with her 3-under par 68 on the par-71 course. She started strong in the second round, recording two birdies on the front nine for a 2-under par at the turn. After a bogey on No. 11, she posted an eagle two on the 367-yard par-4 hole No. 12 to move to 3-under par.

Buchanan enters the final round five shots out of the lead and just three shots out of fourth place. Sarah Bae of High Point holds the 36-hole lead with a 2-under-par 140 (70-70), while Chattanooga’s Agathe Sauzon and Campbell’s Kaylin Yost are tied for second just one shot back at 1-under par 141.

Buchanan’s play helped the Spartans sit in 12th place overall in the team standings with a 615 after scores of 313 in round one and a season-low 302 in round two. Southern Conference foe Chattanooga leads the team standings with a 578 (289-289), while Campbell is second at 588 (299-289) and Maryland is third at 590 (288-302).

Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 28th place overall with a 9-over-par 151. Bjornsdottir opened the tournament with a 2-over par 73 as she opened her day with an eagle on hole No. 1 before posting four bogeys.

Freshman Kristine Powers turned in her best round of the year with a 5-over par 76 in round two Monday. Powers enters the final round tied for 56th with a 157 (81-76). Sophomore Lily Crane posted a 162 to sit in 72nd place, while freshman Maddie MacClurg turned in a 159 to sit in 62nd place playing as an individual.

The third and final round begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday at the Starmount Forest Country Club.
