Ontiveros Named Men's Soccer Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman senior midfielder Martin Ontiveros has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. The selection is made by the league office.

The Paladins (1-1) opened the season against a pair of ranked opponents at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Ontiveros scored twice on Friday as Furman knocked off No. 22 (College Soccer News) Xavier, 4-3 in double overtime.

The Pharr, Texas, native scored in the 42nd minute to put Furman ahead 2-1 heading into the half. With the game knotted at 3 in the second extra period, Ontiveros converted an Adrian McInnis throw-in in the 106th minute to lift the Paladins to the upset.

Furman fell to No. 8 Akron, the 2010 national champion, 1-0 on Sunday to cap its tournament stay. Ontiveros took a game-high four shots in the close loss.

The weekly award is the first of Ontiveros’ career.

Furman returns to action Saturday when it hosts College of Charleston for the Gray Griffin Memorial Game in Greenville, S.C., at 7 p.m.

Also nominated: Danny Free (Appalachian State), Matt Pacifici (Davidson), Nick Butterly (Elon), Neal Bates (Georgia Southern), David Reittinger (UNCG) and Connor Davis (Wofford).
