No. 17 Furman 1, James Madison 0 (2OT)

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore Tyler Peoples found the back of the net midway through the second overtime period to lift 17th-ranked Furman to a 1-0 victory over James Madison in nonconference men’s soccer action on Friday night at University Park.

With its sixth consecutive victory and sixth straight shutout, Furman improved to 7-1-0 on the season. The Dukes fell to 3-3-1.

At the 104:25 mark, Peoples created space inside the JMU box and lined a shot to the lower left-hand corner past Dukes goalkeeper Bill Groben to hand the Paladins a 1-0 victory. It marked Peoples’ third goal of the season and second match-winning tally.

The Paladin defense limited the Dukes to just three total shots and only one shot on goal in more than 104 minutes as Furman extended its streak of consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal to 586:50. Furman produced most of the chances during regulation but was unable to find the back of the net on its three shots on target during the opening 90 minutes.

Sophomore Sven Lissek kept the Paladins in the match in the final moments of the first overtime when her dove to turn away a potential game-winning shot from JMU’s Eric Schmidt. It proved to be the only shot on target for the Dukes and Furman managed a 6-1 edge in total attempts during the overtime periods.

Lissek earned the win in goal and notched his fifth shutout of the campaign. Groben tallied three saves for James Madison.

The Paladins open Southern Conference play on Sunday when they face Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. Kickoff is slated for noon.
