Elon's Murphy Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition Sept. 16-22. The selection is made by the league office.

Murphy went 1-0-1 with 15 saves and a 0.45 goals against average on the week.

Against Liberty on Friday, Murphy made five saves in the Phoenix’s 2-0 win. The shutout was the 11th of Murphy’s career.

Two days later at VCU, the junior from Sterling, Va., allowed just one goal in Elon’s 1-1 draw with the Rams. She made a season-high 10 saves as the Phoenix picked up the road result.

Murphy is 5-0-2 on the season with a 0.56 GAA, good for second in the SoCon. She has made 20 saves and allowed just four goals in eight starts.

The weekly award is the first of Murphy’s career.

Elon (5-1-2, 0-0-0 SoCon) opens Southern Conference play Thursday when it hosts Western Carolina (5-2-1, 0-0-0 SoCon) at 7 p.m.
