Elon Keeper Dean Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon keeper Nathan Dean has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition Sept. 16-22. The selection is made by the league office.

Dean, a junior from Liverpool, England, allowed one goal on the week, posting 15 saves and a 0.45 goals against average in two contests.

In Elon’s 1-0 win over No. 9 Wake Forest on Sept. 17, Dean made six saves for his first shutout of the season and 12th of his career.

He followed that up with a career-high nine saves in a 1-0, double-overtime loss against William & Mary on Friday. The loss was the Phoenix’s first of the season.

Dean is off to a 5-1-1 start on the season with a 0.79 GAA to help Elon jump into the national rankings. The Phoenix entered the NSCAA Continental Tire Top 25 at No. 24 last week and debuted at No. 23 in the College Soccer News Top 30 last week. This week, Elon entered the Soccer America poll at No. 25.

The award is the second of Dean’s career and his first since Oct. 30, 2012.

Elon (5-1-1) hosts Radford on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before making the short trip to face Triad rival High Point on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Also nominated: Trey Hemphill (Appalachian State), Valeriy Sviderskiy (Davidson), Sven Lissek (Furman), Eric Dinka (Georgia Southern), Brian Graham (UNCG) and Matthew Aurednik (Wofford).
