Furman ties for fifth at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Taylor Totland carded a par-72 on Sunday to lead the Furman women's golf team to a tie for fifth place at the 42nd Lady Paladin Invitational at the par-72, 6,266-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Wisconsin (+1) fired a tournament-record 281 on Sunday, breaking the previous single-round record of 283 set by Georgia in 2003, to win the Lady Paladin with a 54-hole score of 865, also a tournament record.  The Bulldogs won the 2003 tournament with a three-day score of 866.  Clemson (+3) finished second at 867, while GRU Augusta (+6) was third with a score of 870.

The Tigers' Ashlan Ramsey (-7) garnered individual medalist honors after shooting a 70 on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 209, breaking the former Lady Paladin tournament record of 210, set by Auburn's Celeste Troche in 2000. Kennesaw State's Ines Lescudier shot a hole in one on the par-3 No. 14 on Sunday.

Totland (-1) finished 2-under on the back nine and posted five birdies on the day to tie for sixth with a three-round total of 215, while sophomore Valentina Romero (+8) registered two birdies in the final round to tie for 21st with a 54-hole total of 224.

Senior Aubrie Street (+10) recorded back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to conclude the tournament tied for 25th with a score of 226. Senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir (+15) finished the tournament tied for 50th after shooting a 79 in Sunday's final round, and junior Laura DeMarco (+17) moved up to a tie for 56th place after notching a third-round 77 on Sunday.

Furman will compete at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, Oct. 13-15.

 

Samford finishes eighth at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Senior Natalie Mitchell registered a three-day, 54-hole total of 3-over-par 219 (76-70-73) Sunday to lead the Samford University women’s golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Lady Paladin Invitational Golf Tournament held at the par-72, 6,266-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Mitchell finished the three-round competition tied for 12th place in the massive 90-player field. Her round of 2-under-par 70 on Saturday proved to be Samford’s best score of the weekend.

As a team, the Bulldogs concluded the event just three strokes behind Texas A&M and six behind Florida State. Samford carded a final team score of 900 (307-291-302) and blistered the course Saturday with its tournament-best round of 291.

Samford’s Sydney Needham finished the 42nd-annual Lady Paladin Invitational Golf Tournament with a solid three-day score of 224 (75-73-76). Just a true freshman, the Bulldogs’ talented native of Carrollton, Ga., earned a 21st-place finish at the highly competitive, 16-team tournament.

The Bulldogs’ Bailey Gray concluded this weekend’s tournament with a final tally of 228 (77-73-78), while senior Alex Jasper finished one stroke behind at 229 (79-75-75) and junior Emily Stallings rounded out Samford’s scoring with a three-round total of 239 (79-79-81).

The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action Oct. 5-7, as the Bulldogs travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 2013 LPGA Xavier International, which will be held at the LPGA International Golf Course.

 

Wofford finishes 12th at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women's golf team completed its second tournament of the fall season, taking 12th place at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Sunday from the Furman University Golf Course.

Junior Lauren Dunbar highlighted Wofford's weekend, shooting a 7-over-par 223 (71-79-73) and finishing tied for 19th in the 90-man field. Dunbar shot a final round 1-over 73, climbing six spots on Sunday from a tie for 25th. The Columbia, S.C., native had three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey in her final round.

Sophomore Maegan Higgins saved her best round of the tournament for Sunday, also shooting a 1-over 73 and moving up from a tie for 43rd to a tie for 26th place. Higgins avoided the big numbers and had four birdies and five bogeys on her final round, completing the weekend with a total of 10-over 226 (76-77-73).

Wofford began the day 12th in the 16-team field and closed the gap on the squads in front of them. For the tournament, the Terriers shot a 50-over-par 914 (302-309-303), two strokes behind 11th place Coastal Carolina (+48) and seven behind 10th-place Georgia State (+50). The Terriers finished 20 strokes ahead of 2013 NCAA Regional participant UNCW (+70), which came in 13th place.

Wisconsin, a 2013 NCAA Championship participant, shot a final-round 7-under-par 281 to win the tournament at 1-over 865 (290-294-281), two strokes ahead of second-place Clemson. The Badgers' final round 281 broke the 18-hole record at the Lady Paladin Invitational, and their three-round 865 broke the 54-hole record.

Clemson's Ashlan Ramsey finished atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under 209, breaking the Lady Paladin individual 54-hole record. Ramsey shot under par in all three rounds (68-71-70) en route to breaking the record.

The Wofford women's golf team continues the fall season next Monday, Sept. 30, beginning the two-day UNCG Starmount Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C.

 

UNCG finishes 16th at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team continued its improvement each round and trimmed four strokes off its score in round three of the Lady Paladin Invitational Sunday at the Furman University Golf Course.

The Spartans improved between the first and second round by nine strokes Saturday and cut an additional four strokes off their score in the final round Sunday as they carded a 312 to finish with a 953 in 16th place. Wisconsin came from behind to win the team title with a three-round score of 865, while Clemson finished second with an 867.

George Regents Augusta, which had led after the first two rounds, rounded out the top three with a third-place finish. Individually, Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson won the event with a 7-under 209, which is a tournament record for the Lady Paladin Invitational.

Sophomore Lily Crane paced the Spartans individually, as she finished tied for 60th overall with a 234. Crane opened with a 78 before carding a 79 Saturday but posted her best round of the weekend Sunday with a 77.

Sophomore Sammie Buchanan moved up to 67th place overall as she turned in the Spartans’ best round of the weekend, firing a 3-over 75 Sunday. Buchanan finished with a 236, moving up seven places in the final round.

Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir finished in 72nd place with a 239 (82-77-80). Freshman Kristin Powers added a 246 (87-79-80), while classmate Maddie MacClurg turned in a score of 254 (88-81-85).

The 2013 Lady Paladin Invitational included Clemson, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, George Regents, Georgia State, Houston, Kennessaw State, Nova Southeastern, Samford, Southern Miss, Texas A&M, UNCW, Wisconsin and Wofford.

The Spartans return to action when they host the Starmount Forest Invitational at the Starmount Forest County Club Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

 

UTC finishes eighth at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished eighth at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship at Cherokee Country Club. UTC shot 591 for the rain-shortened, 36-hole event.

Isabella Loza and Jordan Britt led Sunday’s 299 effort with rounds of 74. Agathe Sauzon and Emily McLennan tallied the other two counting scores shooting 75 and 76, respectively.

McLennan led the Mocs at plus-4, 146, tying for 19th. That was two shots clear of Sauzon and Loza at 148, while Britt was another stroke back at 149.

That quartet paced an effort that bested three SEC and two Big 10 squads. Chattanooga ended up two ahead of Michigan and Mississippi State, which tied for ninth at 593, and seven clear of College of Charleston (598). UTC was three out of seventh behind Notre Dame (588).

Arkansas (563) claimed an eight-stroke win over South Carolina (571). Tulane (579) and Tennessee (581) finished third and fourth. The Razorbacks’ Emily Tubert was medalist at 5-under 137, three ahead of teammates Regina Plascencia and Gaby Lopez along with three others.

The Mocs are back on the course a week from Monday at the Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNCG. The two-day, 54-hole event begins on Monday, Sept. 30, at Starmount Forest Country Club.
