Furman tied for third at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Taylor Totland fired a 72 Saturday to place the Furman women’s golf team in fourth place following the second round of the 42nd Lady Paladin Invitational at the par-72, 6,266-yard Furman University Golf Course.

GRU Augusta held onto the lead for the second consecutive day after recording a par 288 for a 36-hole total of 573, the lowest team total for the first 36 holes of the tournament by one stroke over Georgia’s 2003 score of 574. Clemson (+2) remained in second at 578, with Wisconsin (+8) in third at 584.

The Tigers’ Ashlan Ramsey (-5) holds the individual lead after shooting a 71 on Saturday for a two-day total of 139, tying the Lady Paladin record for the lowest score on the first 36 holes, set by Michele Guibault of Florida State in 1981 and matched by Furman’s Monique Gesualdi in 2004.

Totland (-1) finished the front nine 1-over, then capitalized off of two birdies on the back to finish the day even at 72. Her two-day total of 143 leaves her in a tie for sixth place headed into Sunday’s final round. Sophomore Valentina Romero (+2) carded a 75 Saturday after recording birdies on three of the course’s first four holes to finish the round tied for 11th.

Senior Aubrie Street (+5) shot a 77 on Saturday to enter the final round tied for 25th place, while senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir (+8) is tied for 37th after tallying four birdies in the second round for a 77. Junior Laura DeMarco (+4) concluded Saturday’s round tied for 60th after recording an 80.

The 54-hole Lady Paladin Invitational concludes on Sunday. A shotgun start is slated for 9 a.m.

 

Wofford 12th at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women’s golf team shot a 21-over-par 309 Saturday in round two of the Lady Paladin Invitational, falling from a tie for eighth down to 12th place.

Wofford shot a 14-over 302 in Friday’s opening round but posted scores of 3-over 75, 5-over 77, 6-over 78 and 7-over 79 on Saturday at the Furman University Golf Course to move back four positions.

Senior Anne Marie Covar shot the 75, including a stretch of five birdies in six holes from the 15th to the second. Beginning her day on No. 9, Covar was 3-under on her round heading into the final four holes but triple-bogeyed number five, bogeyed number seven and double-bogeyed her finishing hole to complete the round 3-over.

Beginning the day tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard after shooting an opening-round 1-under-par 71, junior Lauren Dunbar backed up to a tie for 25th with a second round 7-over-par 79. The junior had a rough start with four bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys to wind up 8-over par through her first nine holes. To her credit, Dunbar settled down and shot 2-under with no bogeys through her final nine holes to salvage the day.

Freshman Katy Funk shot a 78 after Friday’s opening-round 77 and is 11-over for the tournament. Sophomore Maegan Higgins is 9-over through 36 holes after shooting a 77 on Saturday. Covar is also 9-over-par, while Dunbar leads the Terriers at 6-over. Senior Shelby Winters shot an 11-over-par 83 on Saturday and is tied for 85th at 20-over for the tournament.

Georgia Regents University Augusta shot the best round of the day, an even-par 288, and is in the lead by five strokes at 3-under-par for the tournament.

Sunday’s final round will go off in a shotgun format at 9 a.m. The Terriers will begin on holes 10 through 12.

 

UNCG 16th at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team improved nine strokes in round two of the Lady Paladin Invitational on Saturday at the Furman University Golf Course, posting a 316 to remain in 16th place with a two-day total of 641.

Round three Sunday will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Sophomore Lily Crane leads the Spartans after 36 holes with a 157 as she posted a second-round tally of 7-over 79. Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir posted the Spartans’ top round of the day Saturday with a 5-over 77 to move up to 68th place with a two-round score of 159.

Sophomore Sammie Buchanan dropped down to 74 place with a two-day total of 161 as she turned in a score of 83 Saturday. Freshman Kristin Powers improved eight strokes from round one, posting a 7-over 79, while classmate Maddie MacClurg trimmed seven strokes from her first-round score.

George Regents Augusta leads the field with a 3-under par 573 as it posted an even-par score Saturday. Clemson is second at 2-over par 578 (287-291), while Wisconsin is third with an 8-over par 584 (290-294). Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson holds the individual lead with a 5-under-par 139 (68-71) while Eunice Yi of George Regents is second with a 4-under-par 140 (68-72).

 

Second round of Mercedes-Benz Championship canceled

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Saturday’s second round at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship has been canceled. The Chattanooga women’s golf team will play a final 18 holes Sunday, with the tourney shortened to 36 holes.

The Mocs are tied for seventh with Penn State at +8, 292. South Carolina leads after an opening 18 score of 279, -5.
