Friday's Men's Soccer Roundup

Furman 5, East Tennessee State 0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Five different Paladins found the back of the net as the Furman men’s soccer team broke down a stingy East Tennessee State defense to score a 5-0 victory over the Buccaneers on Friday night.

The victory, Furman’s fourth straight, improved the Paladins to 5-1-0.  ETSU fell to 2-2- on the season.

Playing an East Tennessee State team that had allowed only two goals in its first five matches and was coming off of a victory at eighth-ranked UAB, Furman pumped in five goals to give the Paladins 15 goals in their last three matches.

Senior Martin Ontiveros opened the scoring in the 24th minutes as freshman Marco Ortiz placed a cross into the path of the Pharr, Texas, native, who netted his third goal of the season. Less than six minutes later, freshman Dylan Rowe ripped a 35-yard shot into the right corner past ETSU goalkeeper Ryan Coulter to double the lead at 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Buccaneers mounted a challenge in the opening minutes of the second period, but Furman added to the lead at the 76:39 mark when Coulter’s clearance was chested down and volleyed into the back of the net from more than 30 yards away by sophomore Tyler Peoples. In the 82nd minute, Evan De Ycaza played a combination with fellow freshman Lewis Hawke and the Scottish striker finished by curling a shot into the corner to up the margin to 4-0.

De Ycaza capped the scoring at 87:25 by pouncing on the loose ball and scoring into an open net after Coulter could only deflect a Hawke effort from inside the box.

The Paladins, who have recorded four consecutive shutouts, posted a 14-11 lead in shot attempts and 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Sven Lissek totaled two saves to earn the shutout and victory in goal.  Coulter turned away one Furman shot in a losing effort for ETSU.

Furman continues nonconference play when it returns to Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium to host Gardner-Webb on Monday at 7 p.m.

Appalachian State 2, Lipscomb 2 (2OT)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite two early goals from Trey Hemphill, Appalachian State was unable to hang on in a 2-2 draw at Lipscomb on Friday on the first day of the Lipscomb Invitational.

Hemphill got the Mountaineers (1-1-4) on the board early when he took a cross from Matthew Melton and headed in the first goal in the eighth minute of action. The Bisons (3-2-1) answered just nine minutes later when Like Gearin converted a penalty kick.

Less than three minutes later, Hemphill would head in his second goal with the help of Melton yet again to put the Mountaineers up 2-1. The lead would hold for 21 minutes until the Bisons drew even when a Mountaineer mistake led to an own goal.

Neither squad was able to find the back of the net in the second half or either overtime period, as Appalachian State picked up a draw for the second straight match.

Hemphill led all players with four shots, while Melton, Harrison Delbridge and Alex Herbst each had two. Geiran and Scout Monteith led the Bisons with two shots on goal, as Lipscomb finished with a 17-14 edge in shots.

Danny Free (1-1-4) picked up the decision for the Mountaineers while making five stops on the day. The Mountaineers finished with six corners while the Bisons had 12 and committed 13 fouls to Lipscomb's 17.

Appalachian State will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it takes on Belmont to wrap up its weekend in Music City USA.

William & Mary 1, No. 23 Elon 0 (2OT)

ELON, N.C. – The No. 23 Elon men’s soccer team suffered its first defeat in 2013 as the Phoenix fell to William & Mary, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday night at Rudd Field.

Elon (5-1-1) suffered its first loss since falling to Coastal Carolina in the 2012 NCAA tournament last season and its first regular-season loss since a 3-2 setback to College of Charleston last October.

William & Mary (3-2-1) earned its second win against a ranked opponent this week after upsetting then-No. 1 Creighton, 3-2, last Sunday. The Tribe’s Roshan Patel scored the golden goal in the 108th minute of action after taking a pass on a free kick from Chris Albiston and Chris Perez. Patel was able to fire a shot past Elon keeper Nathan Dean to seal the win.

The Phoenix came out aggressive in the first half, with Cauê Da Silva getting a couple of early opportunities near the goal within the first 10 minutes, but both shots went wide.

Those would be the only shots in the first half for the Maroon and Gold as William & Mary tightened the defensive pressure and nearly had an opportunity to get on the board in the 36th minute. The Tribe’s Will Smith had a shot nearly go past Dean, but the Liverpool, England, native manage to get a hand on it to preserve the first-half shutout.

In the 65th minute, the Tribe appeared to score the first goal of the contest after Albiston fired a shot that hit the post. The carom found the foot of a William & Mary player, who sent it to the back of the net, but Elon caught a break as he was called offside.

In the second stanza, Elon was outshot 8-7, but had the final chance in regulation to go ahead, but Jason Waterman’s attempt from 7 yards right of the box was blocked.

Elon managed only one shot between the two overtime sessions and saw its six-match season-opening unbeaten streak come to an end. Dean made a career-high nine saves in the contest while playing every minute in the post. Da Silva led the Phoenix with four shots, followed by Waterman with three.

Elon closes out its four-match homestand on Wednesday against Radford. That match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Radford 2, Georgia Southern 1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Georgia Southern dropped a 2-1 result to Radford in the opening match of the 2013 Asheville Invitational on Friday.

GSU conceded a goal early but tied the match just after the halftime break. Radford, however, added a 69th-minute goal to take the victory.

The Highlanders (2-2-1) opened the scoring in the third minute, when Joe Mayer got free on a breakaway through the Eagle defense. He slotted the shot into the net from 10 yards to put Radford on top, 1-0.

Georgia Southern was outshot 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes as goalkeeper Neal Bates made four saves.

The teams remained level through the break, but Georgia Southern got the equalizer just 3:15 into the second half as the Norton brothers combined for a goal. Reed Norton delivered a searching cross to the penalty spot, where Hunter Norton was on hand with a beautiful diving header to score the goal. The goal was his second of the season, moving him into a tie with Eric Dinka for the team lead.

Radford posted the game-winning goal in the 69th minute as Bernardo Ulmo’s breakaway goal put the Highlanders on top 2-1.

Georgia Southern responded in the final 20 minutes, pushing hard for another equalizer. The goal, however, would not come, despite 10 shots by Southern in the second half.

The Eagles continue play in the 2013 Asheville Invitational on Sunday afternoon against the host, UNC Asheville. That contest starts at 2:30 p.m. from UNCA’s Greenwood Field. That game can be seen live on the Big South Network from BigSouthSports.com.
