Furman tied for third at Lady Paladin Invitational
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women’s golf team carded an opening-round 290 Friday to tie for third in the 42nd Lady Paladin Invitational at the par-72, 6,266-yard Furman University Golf Course.
GRU Augusta grabbed the first-round lead with a 3-under 285, while Clemson (-1) stands in second at 287. The Tigers’ Ashlan Ramsey and GRU Augusta’s Eunice Yi are tied for the individual lead after shooting opening-round 68s to conclude the day at 4-under.
Freshman Taylor Totland and sophomore Valentina Romero each fired a 71, finishing the day tied for sixth at 1-under par to lead the Paladins. Totland notched back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and 7 then captured a birdie on 11, while Romero tallied five birdies in the opening round, fashioning a strong finish with birdies on 16 and 18.
Senior Aubrie Street is tied for 13th after carding consecutive birdies on 13 and 14 for a 1-over 73, while fellow senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir shot a 75 to complete the round tied for 25th at 3-over. Junior Laura DeMarco (+4) concluded Friday’s round tied for 33rd after recording a 76.
Due to predicted inclement weather in the Greenville area, second-round play in the 54-hole tournament is slated for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with Sunday’s final round also scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Wofford tied for eighth at Lady Paladin Invitational
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women’s golf team began the three-day, 54-hole Lady Paladin Invitational on Friday from the Furman University Golf Course, and is tied for eighth place after round one in a field that includes six participants from the 2013 NCAA Regionals.
Junior Lauren Dunbar led the way for the Terriers, shooting a 1-under-par 71 to finish the opening round tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.
Wofford used Dunbar’s round to complete the day tied for eighth place in the 16-team field. The Terriers shot a 14-over-par 302 to sit even with Texas A&M, UNCW and Georgia State. The Aggies and Seahawks are two of six teams in the field that reached the 2013 NCAA Regionals. The other four schools include Wisconsin, Florida State, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina. Wisconsin was the only to make it to last year’s NCAA Championships.
Dunbar, seniors Anne Marie Covar and Shelby Winters, sophomore Maegan Higgins and freshman Katy Funk comprise Wofford’s five-man team for the weekend. Higgins carded three birdies en route to a 4-over 76. The Terrier Intercollegiate runner-up, Funk, had an up-and-down back nine, but settled down with seven pars on the front to shoot 5-over 77. Covar had five birdies but added seven bogeys and two doubles for a 6-over 78, while Winters came in with a 9-over 81.
Saturday’s second round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
UNCG 16th at Lady Paladin Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team concluded round one of the Lady Paladin Invitational in 16th place Friday at the Furman University Golf Course. The Spartans shot an opening-round 326.
Round two Saturday will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Sophomores Sammie Buchanan and Lily Crane led the way for the Spartans as they fired 6-over 78 scores in the first of the three-round, 54-hole event. Buchanan was only 1-over through the first 13 holes before finishing with a 78, while Crane was just 1-over through 11 holes before dropping a few strokes down the stretch.
George Regents Augusta leads the field with a 3-under par 285, while Clemson is second at 2-under-par 286 and Furman is third at 2-over-par 290. Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson and Eunice Yi of GRU Augusta are tied for the individual lead with a 4-under 68.
UNCG junior Berglind Bjornsdottir posted an 83 in round one, while freshmen Kristin Powers and Maddie MacClurg rounded out the UNCG lineup.
Chattanooga tied with seventh at Mercedes-Benz Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team is tied for seventh with defending champion Penn State after 18 holes of the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Cherokee Country Club. UTC used a strong back nine to card an 8-over-par 292.
The Mocs made the turn at 11-over par, but surged up the leaderboard behind a strong effort on holes 10-18 from Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon.
The duo combined to shoot minus-5 on the second nine. McLennan shot 33 (-3) on the back side, while Sauzon turned in a 34 (-2). The 33 pushed McLennan into a tie for eighth at 1-under 70.
Sauzon’s 73 was one ahead of Isabella Loza, who shot 74. Jordan Britt rounded out the counting scores with a 75. Mette Kryger had the drop score with a 77.
The Mocs and Nittany Lions are two shots out of sixth behind Tulane and one stroke clear of ninth-place Mississippi State. Ole Miss is another shot back in 10th.
South Carolina is in first-place at minus-5 (279). The Gamecocks lead second-place Arkansas by three at 282. Katelyn Dambaugh (South Carolina) and Fanny Cnops (UCF) are tied for first at 3-under 68.
The Mocs start out Saturday’s second round at 8:30 a.m. Individual Porsche Campbell starts out, followed by Kryger (8:40), Britt (8:50), Loza (9:00), Sauzon (9:10) and McLennan (9:20).
