SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon’s Luis Vargas has been named the Southern Conference men’s cross country runner of the week for his performance during the weekend of Sept. 13-15, the league office announced Wednesday.
Vargas covered the 8K course at the Elon Invitational in 24:19, finishing in first place and missing his personal and school record by just three seconds. His time is the third-fastest to be clocked on the Elon course.
He also pushed the Phoenix to a team win over UNCG, North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central.
Vargas, a junior and native of Angier, N.C., is an accounting major. He has finished first in both of Elon’s meets in 2013, teaming up with Ben Perron to win the Wake Forest Relays in addition to his win at the Elon Invitational.
Elon will travel to Charlotte, N.C., to compete in the Charlotte Invitational on Sept. 28.
