Elon 3, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Two second-half goals and a stellar defensive effort helped the Elon University women’s soccer team to a 3-0 win over the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational.

Elon improved to 4-1-1 with the victory, while TAMCC fell to 1-5 with the setback.

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the 39th following a Kendall Stanley goal in front of the net off her own rebound from a previous shot.

Nicole Dennion helped the Maroon and Gold extend its lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute after a taking a short pass from Kelly Siewers on the left side for the score. Dennion has scored a team-best six goals this season and is tied with The Citadel’s Mariana Garcia for the most goals in the Southern Conference.

Samantha Burch scored her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute to help the Phoenix to a 3-0 lead after knocking in a Kimmie Krauss cross from the left side.

Elon outshot TAMCC 18-3 and finished with a 5-3 edge in corners.

Kate Murphy played 80 minutes between the posts to earn the win.

Elon returns to action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts Liberty at Rudd Field.

 

Chattanooga 5, South Carolina State 1

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Five different players scored for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon in the third game of the Under Armour Border Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb. The Mocs improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Bulldogs move to 3-6-1 overall.

Chattanooga got the scoring started in the 23rd minute with a header from freshman Ashley Simmons on a corner kick from sophomore Hannah Wyatt. It would take just a little more than two minutes for the Mocs to add their second goal of the game. Sophomore Clare Latham sent a through ball to classmate Loryn Queen, whose shot beat out the Bulldog keeper from 10 yards out.

Still in the first half, the Mocs would get another first-time goal as freshman Monica Speth connected with the net on her shot. She was slotted the ball by sophomore Logan Higgins and got past two defenders for a 1-on-1 with the keeper on the left side for her first collegiate goal. Chattanooga took a 3-0 lead into intermission.

In the second half, the Mocs would get two more goals to build their lead. Latham picked up a pass from Speth at the top of the box and beat out the defenders with a shot from the right side. In the 68th mninute, junior Crystal Mackezyk knocked in her team-high fourth goal of the year with an assist from sophomore Skylar Brewer for the Mocs’ fifth goal of the game.

South Carolina State scored its lone goal in the waning minutes of the game as Dominique Brown fired in her third goal of the season from the right side for the final 5-1 margin.

The Mocs outshot SCSU 19-8 with a 13-5 shots on goal advantage. Senior keeper Taylor Mangrum started the game and played nearly 68 minutes in goal. She made just one save and did not give up a goal. Sophomore Lauren Thomas was inserted into the game midway through the second half and made three saves while giving one goal.

Bulldog keeper Haley Austin made eight saves in her 90 minutes in goal while allowing five goals to the Mocs.

Chattanooga remains on the road with a match at Tennessee Tech on Friday evening in Cookeville. The contest is set to kick off at 5 p.m. Eastern time.

 

Western Carolina 1, East Tennessee State 1 (2OT)

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina tied future Southern Conference member East Tennessee State  1-1 in double overtime Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Down 0-1 at the half, the Catamounts (4-2-1) came from behind to tie the match in the second half and proceeded to bombard the Buccaneers (3-3-1) with a barrage of shots the remainder of the game. After nine shots in the first half, Western Carolina had 20 in the second half and five total in the two overtimes.

Western Carolina benefitted from its spirited attack in the middle of the second half. The Catamounts had eight shots, four on goal, prior to knotting the game.

A shot by freshman Kasey Cooke was blocked, setting up a Catamount corner kick. Junior midfielder Madison Lee took the corner kick and placed it perfectly in the box. Sophomore forward Kelly Pannell was there waiting for the pass, heading the ball past Buccaneer goalkeeper Anna Yancey to send it to the back of the net at the 67:25 minute mark.

The goal by Pannell was her third in two games. She scored a pair of goals in the 2-0 win over Western Kentucky on Friday. Pannell’s four goals pace the team this season.

Western Carolina came out a bit sluggish and ETSU capitalized, scoring the first goal of the match at the 19:50 mark. Jenny Poltl took a pass from Hannah Short, pulling Catamount goalkeeper Jenny Lauer out of the net. Poltl moved past the Catamount defense and found the back of the net.

After the goal, ETSU only had two shots the remainder of the first half. In the second half, Western Carolina came out focused, putting the pressure on the Buccaneers. ETSU did not have a shot until 10 minutes left in the second half, with most of the play situated on the Buccaneers’ side of the field.

Western Carolina had multiple chances to take the lead, including a host of shots that skimmed the crossbar.

The Catamounts head back on the road Friday, playing at Mercer for its final nonconference match of the season.  Western Carolina faces the Bears at 7 p.m.

 

Furman 1, Southern Miss 1 (2OT)

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Furman and Southern Miss traded second-half goals as the Paladins and Golden Eagles played to a 1-1 draw to share the title at Mississippi State’s Bulldog Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Furman (3-2-1) broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute on Stephanie DeVita’s fourth goal of the season and third of the weekend. Freshman Delaney Sheehan and junior India Robinson combined to play DeVita into space behind the defense and the sophomore drilled a shot inside the far post to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead at the 51:03 mark.

Southern Miss (5-1-2) produced the equalizer in the 65th minute on Ashley Johnson’s first goal of the campaign. Johnson received the ball deep in the box and fired a shot into the top netting to score on assists from Brooke Hendrix and Danica Roberts.

Robinson and freshman Carlie Couch each forced USM goalkeeper Brittany Taylor into saves late in the second half before the match headed to overtime. The Paladins outshot the Golden Eagles 5-4 over two 10-minute overtime periods before settling for the draw.

Southern Miss managed a 20-18 lead in shot attempts and 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Johnson recorded three saves for the Golden Eagles, while sophomores Rose Hull and Maggie Grisell stopped three shots apiece for the Paladins.

Furman returns to action next weekend when it travels to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida and Jacksonville University.

 

Georgia Southern 0, Charleston Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern ticked all the boxes except the one that matters on the scoreboard on Sunday evening against Charleston Southern, settling for a 0-0 draw to the Big South’s Buccaneers. The Eagles earned their first clean sheet of the season and are now 1-4-1 on the season with league play just two weeks away.

Georgia Southern owned the run of play throughout the contest, holding Charleston Southern’s (3-3-1) chances to just one shot on goal and three total shots. The Eagles, however, recorded 18 shots from 10 different players. Alex Murphy shared the team lead in shooting with Cori Dulmage as the duo took three shots each.

Georgia Southern had its best chance of the night in the first minute of overtime when a free kick was played into the box, where it bounced over the Charleston Southern goalkeeper. The ball was saved off the line by the Buccaneer defense to keep the score tied at 0-0.

Charleston Southern produced a golden opportunity to win the match with about five minutes left in the second overtime. The Bucs had a breakaway chance that found the net, but the attempt was waved off when the attacker was called offside by the referee.

The match finished as a 0-0 draw, giving goalkeeper Heather Kirkover her first collegiate clean sheet.

Georgia Southern will have a week off before returning to action against a dangerous Mercer squad in Macon, Ga. The Eagles and Bears face off at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.

 

James Madison 2, Davidson 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Four minutes away from going into overtime, Davidson saw James Madison score a pair of late goals in sending the Wildcats to their fourth straight defeat, by the score of 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in nonconference women’s soccer action.

The two teams, which had not met since 1991, played fairly even until the Dukes broke through in the 85th and 87th minutes.

JMU’s first goal came off a corner. Sam Lofton sent a ball into the box, where Haley Miller headed a pass to Becky Sparks, who then chipped it just past the end line despite it looking as though the Wildcats’ Rachel Locke had stopped the shot.

The Dukes (5-3) added an insurance goal then in the 87th minute after a long through ball by Lofton to Lauren Wilson, who pushed the ball down on the far sideline and crossed a pass into Katie Hyland in the box for the second goal.

Davidson (0-5-3) finished with just two shots compared to JMU’s 17, but only six of those were on goal, while the ‘Cats got off four corners to the Dukes seven.

The ‘Cats stay at home and will host cross-county rival Charlotte for a 6 p.m. contest next Sunday, Sept. 22.

 

High Point 2, Appalachian State 1 (2OT)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Appalachian State traveled to High Point on Sunday for a match with the Panthers and fell by a score of 2-1 in two overtimes.

Appalachian State (3-3-0) got started early with a goal from Samantha Childress in the 14th minute. Nicole Steyl crossed a ball into the box and Childress made a move on her defender, putting one past starting Panther keeper Jess May to give the Apps a 1-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers would be outshot by one in the first half by a 5-4 tally, but three of the four shots were on target. Megan Roberson got the start in net for Sarah Strickland’s squad and did not have to make a save throughout the first 45 minutes.

Appalachian State would maintain its one-goal advantage well into the second half. In the 84th minute, High Point (1-5-0) was awarded a penalty kick and Kelli Joline was able to convert for the Panthers and knot the score at 1-1. Six minutes would tick off the clock with no further scoring and the match would head to overtime.

No one would score in the first overtime period and the game would be sent to a second 10-minute overtime. In the 109th minute, Kelsey Perrell scored the golden goal to give High Point the overtime victory – its first victory in 2013.

Roberson allowed both goals while saving five shots and faced a total of 19 shots in net for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers will have a week off before hosting Morehead State at Appalachian Soccer Stadium next Sunday, Sept. 23, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
